Was changing my rear wheel bearings today and found my axel is ready to go bang.........



Should i go one from the wreckers or go the strong as fuck ones?

Does this happen much? I'm running 32" swampers, front and rear lockers and reduction gears so i guesse something has to go......

I dont think its to common, maybe if you were blowing lots of CV's in your normal driving but the rears are a fair bit stronger

how many stock axles can you buy for the price of the strong ones

HAve been talkin to a guy who got priced $300 for the streghtened ones and a second hand one from the wreckers is $125!

DOn't really wanna go the strtghened ones cause that puts the force to somewhere else!

Got onto a set of axels in QLD for the right price so will se how that one holds up!

On outerlimits a few people have done it and all running swampers....

On the track if it breaks you have to pull out both axels the diff center and take it home as a floating axel....

Lucky i found it when i did!

i guess if you have the axle out already and have a spare one that's ok, but i wouldn't worry too much. The next one you put in will be like that after a few outings. Just because it's twisted like that doesn't mean it's about to explode. That would be a perfectly fine axle to have in a street car. I would keep it as a spare. I have spares like that, and i can imagine the ones i have in my zook probably look like that at the moment.

Sounds like a lot of money to replace it , where's the VIC zook mates network? hsould be a $50 item?

one thing i would suggest, as with any zook with any mods, would be to take it easy on the take offs, never rev the shit out of it and drop the clutch. You can really save yourself some breakages by taking it easy on the take offs, just avoid the sudden power. People tend to break shit, like transfer cases, diffs, axles, driveshafts etc. It may not be a problem on the road but when your vertical on some rocks with some grippy tyres, trying to get somewhere, there's a lot of pressure on the little components

YEah cheers mate the vic zook net work has come through with the goods!

Got both sides and the axel housing for$100!

Or i could of had the whole rear diff set up for $50 but it's a couple of hours there and back!

So i have spares now!

I think i did this and the rear drive shaft on a natoriuos vic track THE ROCK in nerim! Got the fronts up but the rears just wouldn't pop over! ANy way it that hard about 10 times!

Any way it's all part of the fun i'll just keep an eye on it!

Hey mate , what pressure do you run in your tyres , with swampers they take a lot of weight to bag properly , so you could run them at a low pressure , 16 - 18 psi , this would give you a little flex in your tyres and absorb a little of the shock on harsh takeoffs , also as said above , take of slow and avoid going forward or backwards until stopped completely. I sheared of a couple of axles being silly so drive easy , also if you have full time lockers take it easy on the road , might look cool spinning the wheels but in thed end you pay for it , Cheers Paul.

In the swampers on the road i run about 20psi and off road i run about 15psi!

I have the crawler gears so all my driving is slow techical hills and ruts and rocks and stuff so thats where the stress is i guesse!

On road can yours spin the wheels? Nah it only hits the street on the way to the bush or when i just feel like a cruise.

also, one point to consider while on tyre pressures, the lower you go the more grip you have, so may put more strain on the components .. catch22 i guess eh.

I run the ETs on 0psi to get them to bag and grip a little, but they are crap on rocks because they are a hard rubber so don't grip so well .. which can be good in one way coz ya have less breakages ....

Yeah true the swampers are pretty soft so don't have to run too low!
