Hey guys.

New to the forum, so hard to find these forums hey. But finally on a couple of good ones, I have a early 1litre Zook, chopped down into a shorty ute. Raised 4 inches and 30" Muddies, it's alot of fun but COMPLETELY gutless.

Have found myself a GTi motor on the cheap, so that got purchased, now I ripped the F10A out today and noticed it's HEAPS different to the 1.3 zook motor.

Need to know, If I get the 5 speed from the stock 1300 motor from the zook, the engine mounts and radiator+mounts, sump and dizzy + angle drive.

Am I going to run into any other troubles?

I did some measurements and judging for a later 1.3 zook and my 1l zook, the engine mounts sit 3cm further back. I'm not sure how much of an issue this might cause. Possibly a bit of firewall bashing, but will I then need to shorten the tailshaft 3cm?

Are the 4speed 1 litre and 5speed 1.3 litre boxes the same length?

Do the tailshafts from these interchange?

If I have to use the 5 speed tailshaft and (possibly) shorten it, will I then have any troubles bolting it to the transfer case?

Are there any places I can get some parts for this conversion that might help me rather than getting everything custom fabricated?

Thanks in advance for any help.

1st up what year is your 1 litre, there are a few different configurations underneath that can make your job easy or hard

basically you want to make yours into a 1.3 sierra to start with, for that you need to change the engine mounts (from memory one is OK the other needs to be moved a bit)
the bonnet is also different, the 1.3 bonnet has a bulge to help clear the engine
the tunnel on older 1 litres is smaller so you can either weld in a full 1.3 tunnel or fit a bodylift to give you more room (that will help with the bonnet problem too)
the gearbox crossmember is different on early 1 litres so you will need to adapt something there (I dont remember that being too hard though)

as for the tailshaft (jackshaft) its best to get a 1.3 litre one, the length will be right to setup the engine and gearbox mounts in the right spot and will fit the gearbox properly, to fit to the transfer you have a few options
If yours is the later 1 litre with a 4wd light on the dash, just get the input flange from whereever you get the jackshaft from and bolt it on, if its the early one with no light you either need to remove the 1.3 end from the shaft and fit a 1 litre one by using 2 1.3 uni caps and 2 1 litre or redrill the flange on your transfer (I think they are big enough)

I think all you can get off the shelf is the angle drive, the rest you will probably have to fabricate

Thanks Royce.

Mine is an 84 1 litre by memory.

It DOES have the 4WD light on the dash (to the right of the steering wheel)

It has a 2 inch body lift, so I'm hoping I don't run into any tunnel issues. Still chasing up a gearbox and jackshaft. (If you know any that are for sale, please, let me know).

Sorry to sound like a complete noob, but getting the input flange, what is this exactly? Where do I get it from, does it come off the transfer case on whichever 1.3 I'm tearing apart to get these parts from...?

As for moving the engine mounts, You say one is ok, one needs to be moved, I'm confused. If I were to move one engine mount, wouldn't the engine then sit on a angle? Does it need to be brought forward?

Whilst on the topic of engine mounts, I think the actual engine mounts are the same from the 1 litre to the 1.3, it's just the bracket that goes from the mount to the block that is different. Now, where my engine mounts bolt to on the chassis rails is what I had measured up to be 3cm further back to a later 1.3 zook. I don't understand why this would be, but the tape measure didn't lie (I checked 3 or four times.)

Should I make some sort of bracket up to mount the engine forward that 3 or so cm or should I not worry about it and just mount the engine in where my mounts are?

Thanks for the help.

being an 84 its going to be a lot easier for you thats for sure

The input flange is the flange on the transfer that the jackshaft (tailshaft from box to transfer) bolts to, you need to get the big nut in the middle undone and it will wiggle off the spline with a bit of effort

the mounts on the chassis for the engine arent in the same spot on the chassis on either the 1 litres or 1.3, I cant remember, your 3cm difference should only be on side IIRC

I would bolt engine and box together, get the gearbox bolted in the correct spot and see what you need for engine mounts, you may get away with some simple adaptors, which would be a lot less work than moving and welding mounts

I have also heard you can get a coily fuel tank and put the internal fuel pump from an EFU vitara straight in as well, save a bit of hassle with rigging up surge tanks and lift pumps and so on

what computer are you going to run? if aftermarket give some thought to one that can run multi coil off a cam sensor, might be a bit better than forking out $500 for an angle drive

you might find some use in this

http://ironbark.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/~jeff/1600.htm

its dealing with fitting a swift 1.6 to a 1.3 but the issues with the engine mounts are the same, you might be able to make a similar adaptor as that?

Yeah I still gotta find myself a gearbox. Gonna go to the wreckers tomorrow coz it doesn't seem like there are any avail on the forums around here.

Need another few things still.. joshNZ helped me out today with some of the parts.

Still need a 5 speed and 1.3 jackshaft, I tried pulling the yoke apart on my 1 litre jackshaft, got the stupid clips out, can't work out how to get the thing apart... Haha, might be a job for the tailshaft store...

Still need the cam sproket off a 1.3 so I can put this angle drive dizzy in.

Will be running stock computer and loom and shit, so there shouldn't (fingers crossed) be any hassles there. I was even tossing up whether it would be cheaper to mount the engine forward a bit, get a custom lengthened tailshaft done up for ~$200, and use the stock GTi dizzy, surely there would be a difference in the g13a and g13b dizzys and the g13b would be a better item? (I'm yet to research the difference)

As for the fuel pump situation, I was thinking of just running a Bosch 044 (VL) external EFI pump, with no surge tank for the moment, so long as I keep the tank full it should work? Then later on I might move the tank forward behind the cab and make it bigger with an inbuilt surge tank and pump.

Asked for the day off work tomorrow so I will be getting stuck into it, I want it finished already!!!

If anybody is bored tomorrow on the north side of brissy give me a call and come help/hang out my number is 0427282562, will be in albany creek.
