hey fellow zookers.

im brand spanking new to this forum but i love it so kudos.

i just bought an 02 jimny jlx freestyle in a pretty fair condition but its pretty straight. i got it cheap.

my dream would to run 31s. i have been looking at the tought dog 80 mill lift kit. will this be enough to fit them without scrubbing? and also is there any other bigger kits or kits of the same caliber on the market.

also how much will my fuel consumption increase?

and what will the rig be like on the road?

this is my second zook my first was a 91 model sierra cheers

31s on stock gearing would drive like shit. On road and off road.

I also doubt they'd go under a Jimny with just an 80mm lift without some major scrubbing.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

by stock gearing do you mean the ones in the differential or the transfer?

Author:  Ben_Sierra [ Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:18 am ]
Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

Yep. Either diff or transfer (or both) will need to be lowered in gearing before running 31s or it will just be a waste of time. You'll lose all your crawling ability, kill your clutch and fuel economy will be crap.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

by replacing my transfer with a sierra transfer and installing reduction gears it will reduce my high range reduction by roughly 20% correct me if im wrong. but that would almost bring my high range ratios back to normal and my low range ratio reducted by about 160% using 6.5 1 reducution gearing.

I'm not sure how Jimny gears compare to Sierra gears but more or less yes. 6.5s and 31s would be a pretty good combo.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

in what terms? the diff gearing in the jim is actually lower then the sierras standard,

thanks for your opnions though ben, been a good help.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

Diff gears are lower, not sure about the transfer gears. But I'd assume that the overall gearing is more or less the same.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

yeah im not to sure about the transfer either. but if i am correct it think they are chain driven... :gross: so a sierra transfer will definitly do the trick.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

I've just looked up some specs and run some numbers through some calculators and it seems that its not that simple...

31s with even stock sierra gearing (according to the numbers I have found) is still a fair amount lower than standard Jimny gearing....

Stock Sierra transfer gears with 35s on a Jimny gives almost identical on road though!

These figures may not be perfect, though they are from Suzuki's own website...

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

cant you run a sierra tcase with 5.14 gears and swap the jimny diff centres to sierra? in which case you'd be mad not to get sierra airlockers front and rear =)

my WT sierra with 5.14 tcase drives 31s at stock gearing ratio. 6.5 is a touch lower - which is good for the carby sierra motor, but with EFI its not neccessary.

I'm not sure if Sierra centres will go into a Jimny diff, but if they do then it is definitely the way to go!

31s on a jimny,
ive just fitted a tough dog 80mm lift 2 inch body and guard chop ti get 31 inch claws under mine.
not to sure how it would drive with the standard motor cause we did a g16b engine conversion which makes it go better any way.
still drives fine and handle well on road.
obviously a bit harder takin off with factory gearing.
but ive towed a 600kg trailer with mine and wasnt to bad.
lost a fair bit of fuel consupton but that called also be to do with the bigger motor and bigger injectors.
rear diff in the jimny is the same as a 1.3lt sierra and the front is more like a 1lt sierra as far as i know.
sierra tcase into a jimny is not a hard conversion but the only thing stopping me doing it is because of the speedo 1 being electric and the other cable.
you can get tcase gears for the jimny case from trial jimny which would be great for 31s.

hey smiffkid - around the corner from you is applied instruments - Arnaud there got my speedo calibrated for 31s, and then did the conversion so the tacho worked with the g16 conversion (pickup the feed from the computer and convert it to the standard sierra dial). I'm sure he can do the same for your speedo given a different case.

i saw your build up smiffkid it looks very deadly. i was sorta hoping to keep the 1.3 im just unsure of what i have to do to keep it running good on the road. i.e what gearing to change ect. i also plan to run the tough dog 80. and maybe 1 or 2 body. what sorta fuel consumption you getting?

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

will need 2 inch body if you dnt wanna cut massive amounts out of the guards.
fuel consumption doesnt exist nay more lol.
not sure if its to do with the bigger motor and bigger injectors also but i can only get around 330 out of a tank instead of 440 when the car was stock standard.
the 1.3 will probly go alright with bigger tires but more power always helps

are you going off you trip meter, as you will be doing HEAPS more actual road kms than what is showing.... how many percent is your speedo out with the 31's?

Author:  smiffkid [ Mon Nov 08, 2010 11:33 am ]
Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

na not from the trip meter.
from the gps.
my speedo reads perfect as i has it recalibrated.
but its around 15 percent difference

More power is a poor substitute for proper gearing...

yup - do the gearing and you'll get way better economy.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

yea gearing is next, once i can save some money.
then deffinitly a front bar, now that i have my coil spacers.

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

When you say gearing. Will you only be changing the gearing in the transfer. Or the diffs aswell

Author:  smiffkid [ Tue Nov 09, 2010 9:48 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

transfer.
maybe diffs later once i have researeched and pulled the front apart.
beacause there isnt much to do in the way of diff gears.
but we maybe be able to change a few things and then ill let you all know.

Yah mate. I'm still in the deciding proscess out exactly what I wanna do but I will
Be putting a Sierra case in it with maybe snake racing gears! Could you post a photo of exactly how
Much I have to cut out of the gears

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

i haven done gears yet.
and once i do they will b from locktup 4x4 over here in wa.
there is a bitor mucking around to get the siera box into the jimny.
but the sierra has a 20% lower gearing in hgh range then the jimny any way,
which willbe perfect for 31s

Are you planning on putting a Sierra t cad in your rig

Oh and in my previous message unmentioned guard not gears

yea, sierra tcase for shore

Post subject:  Re: running 31s.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but if you're going to put reduction gears in your transfer case, you'll probably want to spend a few hundred on a roctoy ring and stronger mounts for the transfer case...
