ok. i know the flex is just ok......... but. im after more. cheap easy etc etc all the usual bs im thinkin removing load leaves front and rear. i dont carry heapsa stuff..... ive got longer shocks, ext lines, ext shackles and what ever, springs seem very stiff. let me know what u think cheers |

massive joke there.... wacky shackles, longer shocks = the right length bump stops rear springs in the front (RUF), extended brake lines longer shocks longer springs from the front of the hilux in the rear with a RUF RUF with 3/4 eliptic rear end buying lockers going to be way better then flex. or coils and there is a whole new kettle of fish....

Just find whats stopping it getting more travel and change it to suit. I know it sounds vague, but making springs flex properly requires thought not a set method... Also be aware, there are so so so many dodgey suspension mods done to peoples cars! (one of mine included  ). So don't copy stuff off the net without thinking it through.

If its stiff springs which are the problem, then sure, removing a leaf or to may help... All depends on the setup you have... |

im sure its the springs cause the shocks have more travel to go as ive pulled them out and flex is the same...... |

I wouldn't bother going RUF yet. Theres plenty of guys getting nice flex even with ebay springs. Sounds like you already know what to do. Start playing with your spring packs. I reckon everyone here with any kind of flex has spent hours adding and putting back springs in their rigs over the years. Keep adding subcontracting until you've got the best out of the packs you've got. Do it without the shocks attached and ramp between each change. Remember, once you're happy make sure that the shocks still have enough travel. Best part is it's free. After all this if yous till are unhappy start looking at the more expensive or fabrication intensive things like RUF and whacky shackles (f they float your boat) |

Fook off those shackles, Reduce spring packs, Rubber bushings. 2" springs, and shackles dont work. Try longer springs, and then extended shackles and see how she flexes.. That is all. |

So many different ideas. Here's another one. Leaf springs have a degree of friction not found in coils. Going back in time to horse and cart days, they didn't have shocks but rather it was the friction between the leaves that stopped the bouncing of the spring action. With that in mind, there's a technique of tapering the end of each leaf which greatly reduces the friction between them allowing the suspension to move much more freely. I had great flex in my Sierra and it was tapering and rear load leaf removal with shocks that had been bought based on their extended and compressed length based on the travel of the finished unrestricted springs. To go a step further you could consider teflon pads in between them. As for removing leaves, the front springs are all load bearing so removing fronts will lower the front end. The rear packs have an overload spring (the flat one which is the one I wouldn't hesitate in removing. |

Do you hit the bumpstops on compression ? If you do then removing leaves wont help you get much more flex, it will just make your suspension softer. Have you opened up the clamps around the spring pack, this can help a bit on extension as the only leaf limiting extension then is the top one or two but as Bluesuzy said the only way to get real flex is longer springs. |

My shackles were almost vertical, making only the spring move up and down like an almost fixed position both ends. Flat dropouts were ok, but don't think of ramping it. Pics of example:  Bigger tyres made it work more from weight, but was still not happy.   Same shackles, longer flat springs, same tyres. Not full flex 1st/2nd pic, 3rd is on a ramp. Full flex.    A ramp is good for testing clearances, but it does not show its full movement. Red89 wrote: Bumpstops
I run stock bumps. Front: stock rears as ruf, redrilled spring mount back, Commo shocks Rears: corolla spring stirfry, moved chassis shackle hangar mounts for better shackle angle. Hilux 2wd shocks |
