I'm looking at buying an lj I found down the road from mine. How do I tell what model it is? It's a 3 cylinder 2 stroke softtop. |

you can most likely tell by the CCs on the engine... LJ10 - 359cc circa 1970, horizontal grille bars LJ20 - water cooled, circa 1972, vertical grille bars LJ50 (also called SJ10) - 539cc 3cyl 2stroke, circa 1975 LJ80 (SJ20) - 797cc 4cyl F8A, circa 1977 - also has 100mm wider track, 1979 models had metal doors. |

Yeah you were going ok alien but you came unstuck at LJ50. The green hard top is an JL80 Stockman (grille differentiates it from a normal LJ80) The next one , orange soft top is also an LJ80 Stockman ( grille differentiates it from a normal LJ80 so does the door hinge on the outside, soft top LJ80's had an inside hinge like an LJ50 only stockman had the outside hinge on soft tops) The ute is an LJ81 The last one is a LJ80 Stockman for the same reasons as the orange one. There are some rare exceptions to the rule i.e. some stockman bodies came with 2 stroke engines in Japan. |

LJ50 - narrow front guards, no factory rear flares, smiling grille, sloped bonnet, internal door hinges on soft tops that don't accept hard doors
LJ80 - wide front guards, rear flares, smiling grille like a LJ50, bigger bonnet, internal door hinges on soft tops that dont accept hard doors
LJ80 Stockman - wide front guards, rear flares, New angry grille, lower wider headlight position, external door hinges will take hard doors or new style soft doors.

LJ10: I don't know of any of these in Australia. Does anyone know of any?? LJ20: Very few in Aust, maybe less than 40 survivors, good luck if you've found one. Only has a single Indicator light on front panel. LJ50: Two stroke! Was lots about at one time. Indicator and park lights on front panel and flat bonnet with no vents. Front and rear lights have 3 screws. Some Hardtops had vertical door handle on back door, later ones had horizontal handle (like Sierra door handle). Some hardtops had spare tyre inside, some on the back door. Dash only has Speedo+Fuel/Temp gauges, ashtray and glovebox. Rubber pump on dash for windscreen washer. Savage guard dogs preventing sale to ill-informed who want to put in Corolla engines. LJ80/81: Wider track with wide front guards and flare on rear wheel arch. Vents on front edge of bonnet. Front and rear lights have 2 screws. 4 cyl 4 stroke engine. Dash has Speedo+Fuel/Temp gauges, Idiot lamps for Handbrake and master cyl, ashtray and glovebox. Rubber pump on dash for windscreen washer. LJ80/81 Stockman: Same as LJ80, but: Lower headlights, notch in side of front wheel arch where it meets front panel. Black plastic surround for speedo+Gauges, Radio in dash, Pump for windscreen wiper on steering column. Split system heater for driver and pass footwells. |

I have seen a few (standardish) ones with 2 screw lights (same as LJ80). Must have been a changeover year or something? Also the plastic cluster surround seems to be not present on all stockmans. My LJ81 stockman has a steel surround, though still the square instead of arrowed indicators. I queried this on LJ10.com, and apparantly its normal (overseas at least) for some type 2 LJ80's to have steel, and some to have plastic surrounds. |

From another thread: 303zuke wrote: rick1970 wrote: 2stroker wrote: No 303zuke it has to be a sierra door hinge, the LJ widscreen hinge is 2 and 2 not 2 and 3. Not sure what they are off but none of my 5 LJ's have any hinges like that anywhere. My LJ50 windscreen hinges look exactly like the one pictured. LJ20 and Early LJ50 had 2+3 bolt hinges. Late 50, LJ80 and Stockman had 2+2. (this should go in the "ID an LJ" thread!!) The 3-bolt LJ50 Soft-top windscreen hinges were supersed in the "facelift" of the LJ50 in about late '75/early '76 to the 2 bolt, which was then used on the LJ80 and Stockman. There were other minor changes that occurred at the same time which are helpful to age the vehicle. The exact changeover was at chassis number LJ50110979: |
