Post subject:  big tyre questions

could i run 31's on a stock 1.3L in my zook or will it just be too gutless?
if it is too gutless would i be able to do a engine subsitution on my red P's?
if so what engine and would be good and what will be needed?
and i would like to make a decent size roll cage and making custom bar work so it will be heavy

so what can i do?

thanks for your help...

without gears of some sort it would drive like ass,eat clutches and be way too underpowered.

ive had a 1 litre zuk on 31s and series 1 gears
one on 31s and vit 5:12 centres
now one on 31s and 6.5s but it has motor conversions etc so cant really compare.

You can run 31's on a stock 1.3L it just is not recommended and is geared all wrong. You are much better off putting some transfer gears in to lower your high range back to stock gearing (in combination with the tyres).

1.6 EFI is the go for the conversion. Not sure on the legality on red p's.

hey i was talking to my dad and he said a 1.6 carb would be better cause there is no computer to chuck in so the EFI might be a bit of f**k around..

thanks for all the replies everyone.

if i do get engine conversion would i still need the transfer gears?

Post subject:  Re: big tyre questions

as far as engine swaps, im on my red p's and i bought my sierra with a 1.6 carbie motor and had to get it mod plated and had no issues with it, even being on my p's. so you should be right.

ive got 29" extreme trekker 2's which are about 30" and its not overly sluggish, but they are a pretty skinny tyre. but i havent driven a 1.3 sierra so i couldnt really compare it.
hope that might help a bit.
Seb

yes.
Gearing before engine. You would need a very torquey motor to negate the need for re gearing.

I know a certain someone with a Sierra ute on 31's, who can cook clutches in less time than it takes to install them. He has a 1.6L EFI, and standard gearing...

I had suziblu on standard gearing, 31 baja claws for years, no drama, albit a tad slow on the blacktop, this could have been the very aggressive tread, could have been tyre dia.

1st, 2nd and 3rd, went like a scalded cat, hell of a lot of fun sandhilling.

I have swapped the wheels and tyres to a stock geared maruti 1.3l, shines like the sun.

More power, 1.6l soon, more power more better.

Of course the EFI conversion is more complex, but the result is so much better on road and off that IMHO it's not really worth putting a carby motor in.

Get the gearing sorted with the 1.3, then upgrade to an EFI 1.6 later on. there's no real need for a 1.6 conversion to run 31's once the gearing os sorted.

You need to aim to correct the gearing properly for road use, so I'd use transfer gears that are 4.9 or 6.4 because the road gearing is better suited with those gearsets.

Post subject:  Re: big tyre questions

My 1.6L EFI has been running on 31's on road and off for about 15000km's on standard gearing, so far and the only clutch issue i've had was fixed by loosening the clutch cable slightly and its been good ever since. (again, that might be because its wearing the clutch quicker, but i haven't had the car long enough to be sure)

Top speed runs at about 130kph but at that speed it sucks juice down faster than you can fill it up...

it doesnt go slow though, touch the accellerator and you're going at 10kph straight away... not good with rock crawling...

I have the Engine computer mounted high and dry inside the cab, behind the dash so the car has to get pretty full before the ECU will get wet, and i'm not sure but i believe the ECU's are pretty waterproof... Although if you do break it, you've broken the whole engine without the possibility of being able to "trail fix" it.

As for reliability, just do a search for "carby problems" on this forum and compare it to "EFI problems" and you'll know that EFI is the way to go...

I also believe i read somewhere on this forum, that someone said (yes, i know what i just said) that the upgrade from a 1.3L Carby to a 1.6L carby was doubling the power, and the upgrade froma 1.6L carby to a 1.6L EFI almost doubles the power again... I'm pretty sure the 1.6L EFI also uses less fuel.

I'm no expert, and could be wrong on some of these points, but I'm pretty sure what i've said is right.

thanks to all the great replys nothing realy to add but dad convised me to get some 235-75-15 (29's equivalent) ill get them and see how they go but dad also show me this:
http://www.suzisport.com/shop/ and then search Sierra to 1.6 Adaptor Plate
and to go with it you need this 1.6 Short Motor
what do you guys think?

Post subject:  Re: big tyre questions

i run 31's on my sierra... had a 1.3 with 215/75r15, then put the 1.6 carby in and it hammered, then did lift and 31s with 5.14tcase gears, still hammered but the aerodynamics and wheel weight definitely zapped power.. i then upgraded to EFI and man, what a difference!!!

honestly though the 1.6 carby or EFI is a waste until you sort out gearing. running 29's, which is 11.5% larger than stock, i'd still suggest a set of 4.16:1 gears from http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/suzuki/s ... -case.html

thanks oh and just to clarify i can have a engine subsitution on my p's just cant be too much power under the hoons legislation (v8's and superfast cars or turbo's/superchagers)

Post subject:  Re: big tyre questions

forget the engine... gear it, drive it... once you learn to drive it, throw an airlocker in the back... then once you learn to drive it like that you may not even want the 1.6

mines my daily - so the extra power is a godsend in traffic and on longer drives... but i had mine almost 3 years on 215/75s, then welded the rear before i did the 1.6 swap.
