Both of my rear drums have started to weep brake fluid.

Both are very slow, as in, no noticable drop in the brake fluid reservoir, so hopefully I have a little time to fix the problem.

Unfortunately I do not have much experience with brakes at all. From the pics, can you guys tell what the problem could be, and if so what replacement parts it would require?

diff oil is my guess. looks like you might need some new seals.

No I would pull the wheels and drums off and look at the wheel cylinders. They are about $40 each from repco. But check that the brake shoes are ok or just replace them at the same time, for a 1984 model they are around $35 for a rear set.

yeah give that a go first.

1. leave the wheel on

2. undo the 4 hub nuts

3. take the handbrake off

4. kick the tyre , left side, then right side til the wheel moves loose on the hub nuts and then remove the wheel with the hub attached.

see if the fluid is coming out the ends of the brake cylinder

if you can see fluid on the backing plate its all stuffed inside anyways from contamination I'm afraid

youll need some brake shoes, I would replace the cylinders leaking or not (I would say thats what it leaking anyway) and give it all a good clean

they arent hard if you do one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference but if you arent sure dont risk it and take it to a mechanic

What happened with this one?

My guess was diff oil too, I haven't come across brake fluid leaking on the back of the backing plate unless the brake pipe has come loose, been left loose or fractured. Wheel cylinders normally just make a mess inside the drum and leak out the bottom eventually.

No biggie, just check your wheel bearings while you're at it,sometimes flogged out wheel bearings can cause the seal to leak, that's a bigtime leak! But hey parts are cheap.
