Driving home tonight I spied about 20 brand new Marutis LWB Soft tops lined up on the Wellington wharfs alongside other new vehicles. Obviously just came off the ship from up north.
Suzuki NZ are bringing them in after being pressured by farmers. Down side is they wont be engineered for road registration.
Steve.

I've emailed a guy I know at SNZ. I took him for a ride on a local track in his 2010 GV (company car). Only did $500 damage to the trim but he was due for an upgrade and really enjoyed himself.
We're organising a ZukiCentral gathering over Easter next year and I've asked him to turn up with a Maruti.
I heard they were looking at $NZ17,000 but I could be way out there.
More details as I hear about them.

Silly question, but what colour were they? We only got them in White and Red when they were available here.

And why are they going into Wellington and not Wanganui?

They are all white with canvas tops. I think Suzuki NZ are going to modify the cab area to make them more water resistant. It rains here a lot + strong winds = miserable conditions most of the time.

Wanganui is on the trecherous west coast with a bar harbour for small shipping. Wise folk would not entrust precious cargo to be delivered there by sea.

$13,000 at current exchange rate. Surely they'd be cheaper than that if they're unregisterable?

I managed to get some photos from teh cabin top of our research boat while on the harbour yesterday. They are Gypse Kings, Grey, WT and it looks like 1.3 motors. All this is speculation (except the Grey) until my contact at SNZ comes up with details.

I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat. Shame they're not in Aus, and not registerable.

Last I heard, the rego thing was due to the lack of side impact protection?

http://www.marutigypsy.com/specs.asp

lists the engine as g13bb 16 valve MPFI. very cool.

as for road registering - surely the precedent is set with the sierra? Im sure you could put forward a good enough argument that they would let it be registered.

They would need coily doors and Retractable belts as minimum

And 10 or so to smash for compliance. Then after they probably wont pass for the year/emission ADR's.

Thats why suzuki fooked them off. And made a new Jimny.

They do look good though, all new lwb's 8)

When the Sierra's were complianced here the ADRs were not the same ones as apply now...

Post subject:  Re: New Marutis in NZ

If you just put your plates on one of them I doubt anyone would check. When the cops look it up it is going to say suzuki sierra .
The only thing would be in a crash or theft that they look at VIN numbers and I would say most Sierras around don't have matching engine and chassis numbers anyway.

Post subject:  Re: New Marutis in NZ

i wonder if they would let you do a body swap using a new maruti??? ie: old LWB chassis from aus, but bolt the new body/dash etc on, then chuck in the engine etc etc etc... surely thats do-able?

lol not sure why you'd do it other than "cos i can" though =P
