Are front mudflaps a legal requirement? After putting 215/75R15 BFG ATs on the 95 LWB Vitara, they scrub the flaps at full lock. Must I keep them on?

generally the rule is "if it came with it, you have to keep it".

can you take off the standard ones and fit different ones that wont rub?

Yeh, I was thinking about checking out after-market options. I reckon I might take them off for now. Surely I won't get nicked for removing 3" of plastic?! 8O

i think you will be fine

rear mud flaps are what the cops watch out for
+ lots of cars come out of the show room without front ones

the rears must be no more the 300mm off the ground to be legal.

Funny that, I guess different rules apply to the BNS ute knobsheads, especially considering most of their cars have more neons and lights than a christmas tree, and your not alowed any on a Jap import car.

You guys dont have regular road worthyness checks so is this a problem only when a cop pulls you over for something else?

Same as here I guess. Inspectors are tough on tyres sticking out from the body but there's a lot of latitude on mudflaps. I dont have them on my trucks and we have 6 monthly road worthyness checks.
When we had analogue cop radio most of the air traffic from them was doing motor vehicle checks and they loved it when the warrant of fitness had expired. Good way of getting to the ticket quota .

mud flaps in WA have to extend down as far as the center of the wheel to be legal, well, at least thats how they check them. Flares and flaps also only have to cover the tread of the tyre, not the sidewall.
