G16 cracked block

Post subject:  G16 cracked block
How common is it for the G16 blocks to crack between 1-2 on the crank journal all the way up to behind the sleeves?

cos thats where mine has cracked, and the short motor that i bought to pull down for the block from u-pull it, ive just got far enough to see that this one too is cracked in the exact damn spot!!! can it be welded? is it common or am i just damn unlucky?

seriously not a problem?!?!? really, it goes all the way even to the crank journal, up behind the sleeves

cos the idea of reusing a cracked block gives me the heebies,

but i guess im gonna have to

as long as it was not 'fire damaged' it should be fine. when you torque up the crank and the crank still turns freely there will be no issue.

from what i've been told welding it is no good either, as it just cracks again next to the weld.

Its pretty common unfortunately, as i found out earlier this year in march, PITA, the Carby 1.6 cracked in my 89 Vit, just below the rib near the engine mount, exhaust side, and was slowly leaking coolant... the only real way to fix it, is to weld it, inside and out, but it can be a semi permanent fix, as it can sometimes crack again near the weld... unless you can find a uncracked block, it may be worth considering an engine conversion, i was offered a Baleno engine conversion for $3000, didnt want to spend that amount of coin on it, so got rid of my Vit... :( :roll: :?

fortunately mine doesnt have that crack, that was where i had heard of, but it seems like the crack i have wont cause any trouble, and the baleno block i got as a short motor, has the same crack as mine, the joe blow says not a problem so i reckon ill have to keep it

another update, just been talking to the machine shop we use through work and they really dont like the idea of using either of the blocks i have there, cos of the crack, what are my odds of finding an uncracked block? or do i just buy an unopened engine bolt it in and convert to efi and what i cant see wont hurt me?

Hmmm... personally, i wouldnt use a cracked block, so i can understand the machine shop being hesitant at using them... i would only use it as a last resort... putting in an engine with the notion of " what i cant see, cant hurt me ", is like playing russian roulette... and it will eventually put a cap in your ass, and fail, usually at the worst time, miles from nowhere, and end up costing you heaps more... i know... best to know exactly what you are getting and putting under the bonnet, and get it right first time !

i agree with you fully there, its just that this is adelaide, and cant find suzuki stuff for love nor money (not quite that bad but nearly) and i dont wanna quit on my vitara cos just about EVERYTHING else has been done

yeah they want $1250 for a motor alone, im scared to ask what it will cos for everything for an efi conversion

actually have ordered from them now, very reasonably priced i found and happy to please, and when i receive it ill find out how happy i am with the product
