Post subject:  How much play in a rear uni?

I reckon my rear uni joint (pinion end) is shagged... one of the uni pins has about 4mm of play in it (the other side has none) - this would explain minor vibrations on decelerating at speeds below 80km/hr and acceleration above 80km/hr, right? lol

here's a vid:

x2!! Most of the aftermarket uni's you buy have play as soon as they are installed. I have hardy spicer joints in mine now, no play!

haha oh well, it had a hard life that uni.... thats the factory rear uni joint (as far as im aware) and it survived me on my P's with a welded rear, through to the spoa conversion having no anti-wrap for over 9 months... i've had it nearly 10 years =) haha

JRzook - where'd you get that brand from?

They should be like ~35ea, search driveline services or hardy spicer. You should be able to find a dealer near you.

yup - found one... im confused though because they list 2 different unis for 1300 sierras.. 1981 and 1985 both share "RUJ-1795" and theres another listing on 1985 for a "K5-A557" - which is strangely the same as early vitara. Unfortunately their parts list doesnt let me identify which one i need as they've measured different reference points on the 2 items, and both reference points match my current uni joint! lol

Post subject:  Re: How much play in a rear uni?

K5-A557 has external c clip's, the other should be internal..

ah-hah - so RUJ-1795 it is then, mine's got no clips on the outside. Where'd you see that?

Post subject:  Re: How much play in a rear uni?

had the opposite prob, my rear uni seized completley causing mass vibrations
never had that before mine usually flog out every 6mnths on the rear due to the 3/4 setup forcing them to work at un-natural angles.

by flog out i meant destroy... as in, how did you destroy them to warrant replacing them? ...or is the answer still "with a hammer" ? lol

Still, fitting and removing unis with a hammer is a pretty impressive feat =) haha

alien thats the easiest way to replace them. all you need is a hammer and vice. you should try it ur self before just taking it to suzistore

Post subject:  Re: How much play in a rear uni?

nar not going to suzistore =) haha but i dont have a vice... my local mechanic is happy for me to steal one of his hoists and use his tools though, thats what i've been doing of late when messing with my suspension etc.

OK, got RUJ-1795 joint - getting the old one out took an hour of hammering, squeezing in the vice, more hammering, some swearing, more hammering etc... turns out the original unis don't like coming out!

new one went in like a charm though, interestingly my joint has grooves for external circlip, and the uni has internal - so i used both. seemed to work well.

drives HEAPS smoother now, kinda wish i did it earlier!

Best part - cost me $31 and a batch of jerky for the workshop time =D

Just the usual, mud & probably 15yr's old..

1.6 & a heavy right foot off road probably doesn't help either..

Oh, 2 hammer's & a pair of cir clip pliers's....big block hammer to get the ole one's out & a lil ball to fit the new one's.. :P

i like that my new uni has a grease nipple on it too... that should help extend its life for sure.

oh yeah - and got mine from veale - its a TOYO brand (made in japan) with the same part number (RUJ-1795).

good luck getting the old one out!!! haha

dont forget to mark the spline and shaft so you put it back in phase afterwards too! dont use a paint pen either - use something to scratch the steel, cos paint pen will wear off.

Lol I already used paint pen.. But it hasn't come off yet. After taking the shaft out it seems like there is absolutely no play in the uni's and they also say Koyo on them, so they must have been replaced not too long ago!

I jiggled the flange on the transfer case side and it seems as though there is a huge amount of play in it :?

Anyone know if this is normal? it feels way too clunky to me though

Already permanently marked, on the male it has a dot punched into the end of the spline & the female has a dot where the boot sits..
