I'm up for changing my rear diff oil and am wondering what weight oil I should use. I have an airlocker as well. The factory manual says 80W90 GL5, I've just phoned ARB and they say: Normal use: Shell diff oil (SAE90) Mobilube GX90 Heavy use: Shell Spirax 85W-140 (GL5) Mobilube GX140 (GL4) Now, I have Vitara gears (5.12) that are a bit noisy at certain speeds, probably due to age. Would going a heavier weight diff oil be beneficial to longer life etc? I've run these gears for 3+ years and it sounds the same so is not getting worse. I'm thinking about going the Shell Spirax 85W-140. Do you guys recommend others? What are the implications of running heavier weight oil? - Increased resistance due to a thicker oil being spun around??? |

My personal preference/belief would be standard grade oil if in cooler climates, as heavy oil can give drive resistance until warmed up. But I would add a diff oil conditioner/additive to help with the noise. |

But I would add a diff oil conditioner/additive to help with the noise. Yes I will be adding the Nulon stuff as well. The change in the heavier gear oil is only the hot temperature viscosity, from 90 to 140 so I suppose it'll take longer to get warmed up. |

I have alwyas used 85/140 in my diffs with air lockers. Never had a worry. |

doesnt really help so much as i have a navara .. but i run lsd oils in both my diffs rear lsd also in my transfer and gear box.. its bit thicker and while cold is a smidge harder to shift .. but i feel it protects my cogs and stuff a bit better so i can live with a stiff shift of a morning |

Do people still recommend using LSD oil in airlocked diffs? Something about the additives being better for the seals??? The ARB list standard oils. |

Does brand matter as ARB only recommend Shell or Mobil? (assuming I'm using the same grade) |

i doubt brand will really make much difference. i run standard epx90 in my airlockers |

Not IMO. And if you are doing regular diff oil changes, you would just be throwing your money away. |

Thanks all, I've settled on Castrol EPX 80W90 plus some Nulaon diff additive. |
