My Vit is similar to that, it makes trips exciting, though the pump and box have just started leaking which I'm not to happy about. Are there rebuild kits for them? |

AFAIK, there's no rebuild kit. The suzuki factory service manual shows it as a replacement item, not rebuildable. I'm sure it's possible to pull it down and replace seals etc, but once wear is excessive replacement sector shafts etc would cost more than it's worth to replace the box. As an aside, (sort of) There is a tensioning procedure. I can't remember the exact figures right now and don't have an FSM handy, but in involves tightening the adjuster until there is measurable preload on the input shaft to the box. Obviously, this is a bit time consuming to do as the the steering shaft and draglink need to be removed to get it to spec, but based on the way I've tensioned boxes in the past (by feel - until you can't feel slop through the steering wheel) generally, steering boxes aren't adjusted up tight enough. Steve. |

mines out of adjustment, but it was acting like i had a rooted wheel bearing - it wouldn't return to center. Instead i had to manually (and with lots of effort) bring it back into line. here's my thread on it: http://www.auszookers.com/index.php?nam ... eering+box which also has this vid of me trying to work it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV_uSA6PLx4 |

Which wear parts were you able to source replacements for? |

Gwagensteve wrote: Which wear parts were you able to source replacements for? Essentially all that's in them is the worm gear, and associated rod/gear, two bearings, and two oil seals. The bearings in mine were absolutely shagged. So replaced both, one was a bit of a pain to get out but the bearing they used has a separate outter race so was fairly easy to press back in without damaging the actual bearing. New seals were easy. Packed with waterproof grease (just in case of water ingress when off road). Made a new gasket. Bolted it all back together. Including painting, blasting, and ordering the parts it took me a day too do. If I had everything there ready to go (without having to wait for paint to dry) it's about an hour's job. When I do the write up this weekend, I'll including photos and part numbers (if I still have them). |

The worm gear and associated rod/gear are the parts that wear. It's much easier to check preload on the bench than in the car. Did the steering box have play before you pulled it apart or was it just leaking? |
