Ha ha, with a title like this, this topic could end up anywhere.


Anyway - I got a 90 Sierra hardtop and the back door/tailgate (whatever it's called) has a few hairline cracks in the panel that keep opening up. First efforts I used sikaflex and painted over, but three months later the cracks have opened up again and ruining my lovely roller paint job.

I'm not carrying my spare wheel, and panel is hung correctly. Just wondering how other people have solved this problem (if it's happened to them). Replacing the panel is the easiest option, but I reckon might be an effort to track a decent back door down

weld up the cracks and reinforce if possible.
sika is not any good for shit like that as its flexable.
sika is for sticking in windscreens , body moulds and commodore firewalls etc not for fixing cracks in body panels.

Where are the cracks appearing? Are you sure it's the steel and it's not previous body work/bog cracking? if thats the case then you'll need to do some more homework on sanding it back and reapplying.

I got a crack as can be seen around this part of the window, and a lesser crack mid panel near the door handle

That is not a common place for a crack. Usually they bust out around the hinges.

Is the crack definitely in the metal? Could it be the edge of a bog repair delaminating?

No bog, no rust, had it back to bare metal a few months back to investigate what was going on, panel looks OK from the inside too. I sikaflexed the internal side to seal it a bit better, but no love - split seems to be getting longer.

Well sierras are made from old coke can, so I guess its time for a new back door

Wish it was just the paint. Crack was there back when it was white

if your are confident it's the metal find a new back door and paint that.

if you wanna keep yours drill the ends of the cracks and get someone to weld them up

Its fucked find a new one at some stage.If you weld it it will want ot warp and all kinds of bad shit
