ok guys, i dropped a gti mk1 engine into my 96 coily and has been unregisted for the past 2 years. what i am wanting to know from the people of there that have done this conversion and got there car registed is, do you need an engineeres report for the engine conversion or is it just a change of details on rego papers?? being the same size block an everything, just wanting to know because on the 10th of jan apparently nsw engineering process is changing, possibility of smog testing ive heard.
thanks

You'll definately need to get it engineered. Despite being the same block.
You'll need the papers from the engineer to get it through a blueslip after being out of rego for so long.
Also, as your coily is a '96, and the mk1 is significantly older, your engineer might have some concerns.
They often shy away from approving engines older than the recipient vehicle as you need to meet all of the ADR/emissions compliance points of the newer vehicle, something the ol' mk1 will struggle with.

Here my engineer said its fine as long as I use the same ECU and not FI.
edit: But my car is an '84
I described the engine to him as "the twin cam version of the same engine" he didnt ask for more details and gave me the OK!

Er....is FI refering to Fuel Injection, because teh GTi motor is fuel injection. Why would you be refering to the factory ECU if you are not using fuel injection. Giving you engineer all the details is important, otherwise the engineers slip is useless. A cop can defect you with a fully engineered rig, why tell white lies and risk a bigger reaming.

Extract from VSI - 06 (RTA) - Guidelines for Light Vehicle Modification
Examples of minor (owner certified) modifications are:
Engine changes where the capacity increase is less than 15% above the maximum size engine available for the
vehicle (providing no major structural modifications are necessary and where noise and/or exhaust emission
ADRs apply, all standard equipment such as carburettors, exhaust systems, exhaust gas recirculating valves,
oxygen sensors and catalytic convertors relating to noise and emission control are retained and operate
correctly).
Any Other Questions your asking im sure can be answered from this guide... It only took me about 4 Years to Circumnavigate the RTA Website... Search for VSI - 06 and that should sought you out

Stocker: On paper that seems logical.
In the real world though, it requires engineering.

Yeah, well I spoke to an engineer today and he said he couldnt tell me exactly if it needed to be done or not due to it only being s twin cam version of the old motor,
Reading that document http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... v_2007.pdf
It appears that what I've done on paper would mean its a details swap on rego papers but I guess I won't kno now until I take it in, I've spoken to 4 places 2 have said just a straight details swap n 2 have said an engineerers report so ATM I'm just really confused but guess I'll just have to see what happens

As the RTA website says, Its a GUIDE for LVM's.
It does not state specific details an engineer will know, and can look up.

by FI, I meant Forced Induction, not Fuel Injection..
I also meant the stock ECU for the new engine.
