Replacing the rear wheel bearings on my sierra and the seal sits behind a retainer. Does the retainer come out? :)

There is a steel retaining ring that the seal sits behind. Reason why I want to know is cos the old seal was stuck to it so I need to clean the old rubber off.

I think the steel bit might have been part of the old seal. Is that possible?

Yes. Some seals have a steel outer band.

So you think the rubber seal has separated from its steel outer?

If this is the case you must remove that steel band before fitting a new seal.

Any chance of a pic?
