Hey I was wondering what you guys have done for removable doors. A dodgy way I can see is to cut off the top part of the standard door hindge as well as the pin that would normally be located in that part.

Does this work?

Also I am guessing the answer is no. But is it legal to drive a 92 Sierra without doors? I know you can with some older 4x4's.
Just havent been able to talk to the transport department about it yet

Cutting the top section of the hindge off so they are just pins that can drop the door onto them is pretty common and works fine.

Nah never been silly enough to want to wheel without doors... Lantana sucks.

I'm pretty certain it's not legal to drive a sierra with no doors as they aren't designed to be removed like on a jeep wrangler. Also, AFAIK new side intrusion laws come in in July 1997 meaning even wranglers with a compliance plate post july 1997 cannot legally drive without doors.

Having said that if you are pulled over for no doors I'd just say that they are designed to be removed and it's completely legal to drive without them

Qld is Qld though. Not sure I'd do it up there. Not sure I'd drive a 4WD though either in QLD, seems like too much hassle

The extra visability gives you gbs more confidence on side angles.

Those screws that attach the hinges to the body are almost impossible to get out.
I'm guessing your supposed to put up with the hinges, they probably thought people wouldn't notice them over all the other rattles in a sierra

Cut off the very top that stops the door coming off and replace it with a split pin? I should go have a look at my doors and see if that would be viable.

AIm for rocks then I remember a time at Rover park when Steve was egging me on to drive Fatzook up a big rock shelf (1.5m) with a deep crevice up the middle. He told me that he had done it last time, and that I would be fine. So I got the front end up, then the back started climbing, and when I almost got to the top, the drivers side dropped in and I was wedged. Then He said ' Yeah that happened to me too' Could have killed him

Only the coilys have SIB in the doors I believe, allthough I have never actually seen one.

Sierra doors are designed to be removed and in a pre 1997 car there's no side intrusion requirement so a pre '97 sierra is legal with the doors off so long so long as it has mirrors. Just the same is it's legal to drive a sierra with the windscreen folded (or removed) This is the word from Dotars. (Canberra) On paper, when requested by a club member here in Victoria. (Mika - Greg, in case you were wondering, and his car hasn't seen doors for years) If the States, or your local cop interpret the rules differently, there's really nothing you can do. Personally, I've been pulled over without doors on by my local cop (who is a good bloke) who believed me when I said it was legal, but his comment was that TOG (a traffic cop) might have a different view and issue a canary, and there would be nothing I could do about it. Fair call. We've also been pulled over as a group by TOG, and they've written "notice to fix" notes for all of our cars for tyres/mudflaps etc, but a couple of us weren't running doors and it wasn't mentioned. It's the luck of the draw. If you have an otherwise legal car, and have mirrors, I don't think it's a problem. Qld is Qld though. Not sure I'd do it up there. Not sure I'd drive a 4WD though either in QLD, seems like too much hassle Steve.

i've always wanted to go doorless in mine for the increased field of view - the one time i tried i couldnt get the hinger screws undone so i gave up. lol I've also got speakers in my doors which i'd need to make disconnects on the wiring, so that again made me less inclined. Perhaps once TSOR is back in action fatzook can make us some proper sliding hinges so we dont have to hack our factory ones to bits? =)

Yeah its long gone now. Parted it out years ago. They were 36" TSL's. V6 crummydore motorand auto, Bundy diffs, coil front, Coilovers in the rear, 75 series transfer. Went alright offroad and in the mud drags.

If sierra doors were designed to be removed they didn't do a very good job! My jeep doors take 2 seconds to remove but my sierra doors, well unless you like driving around with hinges rattling around or have a grinder handy I can't see how you are going to remove them very quickly. Those screws that attach the hinges to the body are almost impossible to get out. I'm guessing your supposed to put up with the hinges, they probably thought people wouldn't notice them over all the other rattles in a sierra

(i.e hit down at the 12 O'clock position to make a notch in the screw then roll the chisel to 45 degrees and tap away to crack the paint. It's never failed me and takes seconds. It will/might make a bit of a mess of the screw. Just clean them up with a bench grinder, or replace them with bolts. Cut hinges are hack IMHO, and milled aluminium cut hinges are shiny hack (and a terrible idea - a stainless pin in a aluminium hole ) I will add, I don't run doorless anymore - I run 1/2 doors. All the advantages of doorless, but with better side impact protection than a stock door (let alone doorless) door seals that still work, and stuff stays in the car. Also, with a hollowed out door, an enormous storage pocket in each door. PS Mika - you should try folding the windcreen in a sierra on a car that's never been apart - getting the screws undone that tie the door top bars to the screen and B pillar is a nightmare- but only the first time.
