Hi All :)

I have another wee prob with my 89 Samurai. It's making a tapping sound when driving. I reset the valve lash and thought that may have solved the problem but it hasn't. It's quite a loudish noise, hence why I thought it may have been the tappets.

It doesn't make the noise when the engine is idling or if your not accelerating. I cant possible think what it may be. I havn't notice any decrease in engine performance or anything.

Thanks,
Grunta

what sort of fuel are you running through it? if it's low grade you could be suffering from "pinging" pre ignition of the fuel.

have you checked and replaced the basics like timing, spark plugs, dizzy cap & leads?

crickey, bloody quick replys :D

It's not pinging as that was an issue I had awhile ago and solved that problem. It's got new plugs in it as well so it's not the plugs. I can rev the engine and the noise isn't there, but when driving it is. It has to be engine related though because when accelerating (not hard) it's there. But i can be cruising and it's not there. :?:

I'm running 95 through caltex

I have a whine from my gearbox, and an occasional noisy tappet, Is it really hectic like something's loose/broken or is it just like something is louder than normal?

Not sure if it's something broken. I don't think so because as stated about it's not there if i'm just cruising at "x" km/h but if i put it under abit of load it starts making the noise. If I have the engine idling and rev it - no noise. I'm thinking about putting the vehicle up on axle stands and getting someone to drive it through the gears and see if i can see where it's coming from

Could even be an exhaust leak..

mine made an aweful tapping noise when the cam pulley let go

Post subject:  Re: tapping noise

I hope the cam pulley is not about to go! :( The thing that confues me is that it's not a constant noise - and i'm going to sound like a broken record here  but it's only when accelerating. I could be going 60km/h and just just have enough pressure on the gas to stay at 60km/h and no noise.

Can you post a video of the noise up?

Im thinking along the same lines ot TZAR here, if it only does it on acceleration check your exhaust manifold/gasket.

Layto....

Sounds like a exhaust manifold/gasket leak...

Post subject:  Re: tapping noise - VIDEO ADDED

cool, i hope it is just that. When i brought the vehicle it had a leak between the gasket and exhaust manifold and the guy re did it, but I can't remember if it's the same noise or not. The engine runs fine - as far as i know with these vehicles. Would i need a new gasket or can I clean up the old one a re glue it? Just out of interest how easily do these vehicles rev? I feel taking it up to 3 1/5 to 4k seems enough as it doesn't feel like your getting much more go out of it and it's not as a toyota 1300 which revs easy to 6-7k.

Thanks guys for your input :D
