Post subject:  comp truck ideas and questions
after owning my suzuki sierra neally 2 years now
problem after problem i have with it and my parents forking out money for it.
me and my parents have decided to take it of the road.

so im toying with the idea of making a comp/trailor rig out of it.
ideas are:

ute chop with custom tray.
spoa with standard spring(i know every one doesnt like it but i like the look of it, yes im a idiot :roll: ).
anti wrap bars.
exo cage.
rear locke.r
31 swampers(already got).
g16a(already got).
maby 2 inch body lift(depends how high it is).

how is every one running there rego with there trailor or comp rigs?
i heard you can get special rego thats about 180 dollars a year if your car is more the 20 years old, is that true?
i know its hard to get exo cages passed in qld and you cant have spoa in qld, but does it matter if ur on club rego and u only drive/trailor it on weekends?

how does it work?
if i can get some anwsers it would be much appreciated.

31's + spoa + comps = fail.

all that work setting up SPOA is a waste of time, you can get 31's to fit with some basic mods, eg virtual lift & spring lift or body lift & spring lift.

Find what comp you're going to enter and look at the specs required.

You're not really changing anything from the normal mods in our plan there? Every stocker has 31s and lockers?

If you're parents are forking out money for it now, wait till you start doing mods for comps :lol: .. have you got a car trailer and tow vehicle?

i wasnt thinking of doing spoa to fit the the tyres, more like looks.
thats why i said im a idiot

its either spoa or 2 inch spring and body lift
i know spoa is alot of work to get it right, so maby its best to not do it :)
im not really worried about the mods yet, im more worried about how the rego and all that works.
i have no idea.
im unregisting it this week so i need to know before i do it because it will never past a roadworthy again to get it back on the road

i want the car more for a trailor rig for glasshouse and lcmp
maby the odd comp.

ill be getting a job soon so hopefully i can save for the mods
i got a tow vehicle/truck and a friends got the trailor

also forgot to mention ill be doing a chassi extention

Find the "comps" you would be entering, and see what you cannot do to it. You'll probably find what you have planned will be useful for about zero of them rule wise :wink:

The cheap rego is for 30 year old cars. Very Early 1litre Sierras will start qualifying soon :P .


On another note, if you car is unreliable and problematic. Modifying it more will make it worse. It needs MAINTENANCE!

you need to keep rego on it for most comps, you also need to build to the rules of the comp

if you just want a trailer sailor weekend beater rig take the rego off, build what you want, buy a car trailer and something that will tow it and be happy wheeling it in the 4x4 parks that will allow it

aww i got told it was 20 years coz my friends dad just got a car put on the cheap rego, dammit

the car is reliable, well was now it has starting problems but i mean like its dinted, bent and untidy to passed a roadworthy.

what parks do you need rego in qld
if it unregisted, wouldnt driving at glasshouse be classed as driving a unrested car on the road.
for a trailor rig u can have what ever you want im guessing

Mate as already said before have a look at what comp you are looking at getting into then build it to specs. Mate you seem fairly young by your replies so far and it may be worth just learning how to drive properly before you start trying to build a comp truck. You have to remember the difference between a comp truck and something that looks like one can be 20g +. If I decided to go stupid on my zook like I did on my troll then I would probably run 33's in a trep or similar with beadlocks. Would upgrade every diff internal to chromos. I see you are looking at installing a rear locker, if you are doing comps don't even both with one go twin. Don't do a spoa just cut the fuck out of your guards (remember panels are for poofters), from what I have gathered zooks are wicked off road stock and modded due being light and a good centre of gravity. The biggest issue that I think you will find and what I found with my old zook and even my patrol was the temptation to do backflips. One thing that all good comp trucks have in common is wheelbase - this is one of the reasons why zooks are very good to a limit then bigger cars out do them. I would extend the wheelbase to about 105 inch. On a zook this should still work okay although I haven't really had to much of a think about it.

Really for you to give us an idea of what we can suggest you need to tell us the regs then if you supply the cash we will supply the ideas to build you a very capable truck.

yes im only 18 and have been driving the zook for neally 2 years now

more i think about it, i want it more a trailor rig then a comp rig
just want a cheep build

exo for protecting
ute chop with extended chassi
my 31s and some lockers
nothing to exspensive as im poor and dont want to do the whole comp thing

am i stupid for thinking this?

Id be looking at what comps you want to enter, and then run to those rules. There's only very minimal comps down this way where you can compete in unregistered cars, like rockpecker and Tuff Truck. All others require rego.

how hard would it to unregister the car do what i want to do, like exo and ute chop and get it regoed again
will it be hard since i would have to go through a roadworthy again

dont bother with the ute chop, money for something that wont make it better

remember its going to cost near on $2000 for a trailer, then you need something that can tow it, might be a $10k daily driver there, then its $50-$100 for park fees for the weekend, few hours towing there and back so your likely to only be doing it a few times a year

but you can build it any way you want and drive it any way you want when you want

Get used to it. If you want a car, and you want to modify it, and want to drive it over things the manufacturer did not design it to drive over... it will cost you money! and it can easily get very expensive.

Whether its worth it, only you (the onwer) can answer. Its not a case of is that car worth it so much, as is the enjoyment you get out of it worth it to you? (The next fucktard to tell me spending 5k on a Suzuki is idiocracy, but spending 10k on a shitty Datsun makes sense will be run over with the ride on :wink: ).

so, with a rear track bar, a vit motor (as long as it's reliable), exo, gearing, lockers and swampers sounds like a good plan to me :D plus buying a welder, grinder and bender will come into this, but make your exo well (or removable) and it will be road legal with stock tyres and a mod plate for the motor :D Plus if all you have to do to go wheeling when its complete is throw some fuel in it swap tyres and head off, you will be 87.987% more likely to not sell it and drive it more :D

I think the best bet would be keeping it registered. Your plans don't seem out of the ordinary for standard mods. I was expecting bigger mods when you mentioned "comp truck" like coilovers, 35s+, bigger diffs etc etc.

You don't need to spend huge dollars to get a half reliable and capable rig, look at what comps you want to run, find a class you think will suit you, then mod the car with those rules in mind. Don't always jump in and say you NEED such and such a mod to be a 'comp rig', highest is not always the best. It's really something you need to spend a lot of time researching and put down on paper what you want to do and how you're going to do it. ...& keep it rego'd, 95% of competitions, 4wd parks and 100% national parks (GH) require rego.

Just something to think about. :)

sorry to confuse you
i mean it been a piece of shit before i did the engine rebuild
now every thing works accept the ignition, and i dont have time to keep fixing the problems.
i dont trust the thing for a work car or to get any were any more.
it just breaks down when ever it wants to.
makes me so fustrated

im gonna sound like hotshit980 soon if not already :roll:
