Hi am new to this forum and zooks aswell but I'm looking at getting a 82 suzuki sierra softtop which I would like to build into a mild comp truck.
I was thinking of hilux coild diffs, bigger motor (maybe vr,vs efi 6 motor) and ute conversion with tube tray.
Any idaes or pictures would be great as I am keen to do it as I think they look good when done up.

Forget the v6 and use a 1.6 efi

Need to work out what competitions you want to compete in and see what the rulings are on modifications.

Buy my car, start with that. Sell off the parts you don't want. http://auszookers.com/index.php?name=Fo ... ic&t=18070

What if I was to make it as a fun car with the boys.
I am keen to change it over to coils though and I read about oatis from 4wd monthly and it had a holden 6 in it and went good.
I am trying to find info on the conversion but not sure what to ask for.
Forgive my lack on knowledge but keen for any replys.

I would love to but picked up car for $100 with 2 motors and some spares.
Not much rust in it but know a good panel beater and painter thats willing to help out for good price.

If it's a cheap fun car with the boy's 31's, 1ltr transfer or gears. welded rear and a body lift if you don't want to cut too much of the body work. change the shocks to something a little longer and off you go.

That combo will keep up and often show up big patrols/cruisers/rovers once you learn to pilot it.

If you are looking to compete, as 5ierra said decide which class and comp's you want to compete in and build the truck around that. the V6 definately wouldn't be my first pick of motor. And many here will argue well against it... Hang around look at a few builds and get a better idea of exactly what you want out of the car first.

What is your mechanical background, do you plan on doing all the work yourself or getting someone else to do it ? And what is your 4wding background ?

If this is your first attempt on both accounts then your best bet is to keep it simple, a basic well modded Sierra will show up most cars out there.

I am pretty handy with my hands and what I don't I search for and get info.
I have built up a gu and an 80 series with lifts and other mods.
If I get stuck I know a good group of guy's that can help me out.
I have all ways wanted to build up a suzuki but nothing has come up before where I can get for good price.
I'm not worried if it takes me a couple of years as I would like to get it right instead of doing it twice.
I wouldn't mind something like this

My advice then would be.

Widetrack diffs keeping the narrow track spring and bumpstop spacing.
2 inch rears up front, move the spring mounts to suit, push the front diff forward 3-4 inches.
2 inch springs in the rear, longer then standard either custom length or from different cars, move the rear diff back around 1.5 inches.
cromo front axles.
Vit diff gears.
Lockright front and rear.
6.5 TC gears.
33's-34's on decent offset rims or small wheelspacers, cut the guards and bumpstop spacing to fit.
power steer.
1.6 mpfi

Then learn to drive it, they are a completely different vehicle to Trol's and Cruisers

I just went and seen the guy I was buying the truck from and it isn't a 82 softtop it was a sj41 ute with heaps of odd spares.
Does anyone know if it is a good model to build a mild comp truck from.
I hope for $100 you can't complain.
I have attached a couple of pictures.
Sorry about quality but was raining and taken with phone.

Buy it anyway just because its a ute/lwb, they are rare, and you have a great find there !
Just Dont chop it up... :(

How rare are talking about and if I was to sell the top would it sell just by itself.
It needs a bit of rust repair but not to much.

Can you turbo the 1.3 and if so what size turbo ?.

Author:  LAY80N [ Sun Jan 30, 2011 9:36 am ]
Post subject:  Re: want to build comp truck

You can turbo the stocko motor. Without a full forged rebuild you are limited in power though. As for turbo size - that all depends on what you want, and if you build the motor for it.

First question you should ask is - What comps do i want to do. then work out what the rules are and if rego is required.

This is my version of a comp truck

Yours may vary. If you dont have a decent idea of what you hope to achive you will get lost mid build.
If you just want to build a capable weekend truck, Red89 gave you a pretty good starting point above.
