hi guys got a zook im doing up and have put bigger springs in front, anyone tell me what good shackle angle is? think mine may be to much and guessing the spring will bend may have to put some new mounts in but not sure. cheers |

thats a bit too much angle. 45 degrees is usually pretty good. i personally would be cutting the spring mounts and moving them to fit the spring better |

It depends. Can you show us a flexing shot? Crossed up diagonal? |

they look like they would invert quite easily. what springs are you running? |

Did you redrill the hanger or moved the hanger back. Or did you put the spring in the original hole on the hanger. |

Or did you put the spring in the original hold on the hanger. To me it looks like the front is unchanged just with extended shackles |

that passenger side shackle could very easily go too far and stay there by the looks, (invert) |

still in original hole on the hanger thats why i was thinking of moving it mines a older mod and theres not much meat to really redrill it |

might be an idea to move both ends about an inch and trash the extended shackles while your at it. |

If you hope to keep that shackle angle you will NEED anti-inversion shackles. |

Is that on the bumpstop? What main leafs are they? I just finished mine and separated the mounts overall by 3 inches to keep the same spacing as the stock rear setup. |

yeah on the stops, main leaf is kingspring rear out of a sierra, its still in progress got heaps to do, get hoops and shocks yet and then do the rear, |

only way to get rid of that shackle angle is to move the the rear hanger back or the front hanger forward, or redrill the rear hanger them shackles are will invert eventually |

Is that shackle angle sustainable? Maybe. If they don't invert (which doesn't look likely to me) then it's OK, but it's not ideal. why? Look at the range of motion between the shackles, and you'll see that you're really only using that huge long shackle to make up for the lack of an extension. It's really the worst of both worlds - the wobbliness of a big long shackle, with the short range of motion of a short shackle. There's a reason RUF doesn't really work without an extension (or moving the rear hanger back - but that's dumb IMHO) It's interesting though how small the extension needs to be - the last car I RUF'd was I think about 25mm, but it runs 100mm shackles (and inch over standard) with a nice flat angle and plenty of travel. Bumpstop location is critical though. Sorry if I missed it in your text, but are you running bumpstop extensions? If you are really keen to run without an extension, put an inch or two on your bumpstop. It will reduce the likelyhood of inversion heaps. I don't like anti inversion shackles to prevent shackle bottoming on compression. If they are every needed, you'll bend the spring. Steve. |

Jack one of the rear wheels up off the ground, that will put all the wieght on the opposite spring that it is likely to get in the bush and therefore give you a better picture of whether or not it will invert. Jacking the rear up makes the front work harder. |

it may just be me but i cant see how a shackle can invert on compression as it would have to stretch the spring or bend the mount? |

| Post subject: | Re: shackle angle |
an arched leaf gets longer as it compresses, so the shackle lays flatter as it does... if the spring isnt 100% flat when the shackle is level like: ____ then it will invert... however if its on a flat angle and the shackle takes a knock, it could flip up anyway, so usually a compressed spring's shackle angle is more like 20* off flat to avoid this. |

Dont forget you have got 3 sets of bushes in there as well that could all potentially compress around 8-10mm each giving you an extra 30 odd mm of compression/flex |

Why is this dumb Mr Steve? I spaced my front fixed hangers exactly the same as what the stock rear is. Overall it required 75mm of further seperation. I did this but moving the rear back 30mm and front 45mm, thus using an aftermarket rear (OME, EFS) my diff has moved forward by 10mm. I also run standard shackles. Seems to work quite well and im not stuck with a certain main spring type. Stock, OME, EFS etc will all fit in the front as they would in the rear. Dan |

more to do with the tyres hitting the firewall, and the easy wheelbase extension advantages to be had. |

thanks guys for your thoughts, yeah i think i will move the mounts, it looks like shit and will probably be like a dozer in the step crossings, cheers |

JrZook wrote: Why is this dumb Mr Steve?... my diff has moved forward by 10mm. I also run standard shackles. Dan It was a bit of a stir Dan, but IMHO the biggest advantages of RUF are the 40mm wheelbase stretch and the effect that has on the cars balance point. It's profound. They don't want to pick front wheels up any more. With 1/2 RUF you get the travel increase and softer spring rate, which is good, but not the whole deal. Steve. |
