Post subject:  LJ50 parts interchangeability?

I've got a LJ50 engine that I want to get going and put into a vehicle. It's missing a "few" things. So....

Does the starter motor from any other car fit? I'm happy to modify stuff.

Does the alternator from anything else fit? Would anyone be able to show me a picture of the alternator bracket?

Does the fan from anything else fit?

Normal operating temp?

How does the throttle work? Was there 2 cables? (one for fuel, another for oil?) Or some weird linkage system or what?

Pictures or description of exhaust? From what I understand it's a manifold that goes into a single expansion chamber?

Does anyone out there have a gearbox and clutch (or other parts mentioned in this thread) I can buy off you? :D

Thanks

Hayden

I guess I'll have to measure stuff then and try to get a few pics. Thermostat opens at 82 degrees c and engine normally doesn't get too much hotter (on the dash gauge at least) as the bottom end doesn't exactly produce heat. The throttle cables have the one from the pedal to the carb (to the lower position) and the arm on the carb sort of see saws to pull on the oil pump cable. Oil pump has similar to a speedo drive, driven off the same gear that drives the dizzy and a cam which is rotated by the action of pulling the cable to increase the stroke of the piston as it rotates and contacts the cam, driving it up and down, metering the oil according to throttle position. Earlier engines pump oil to 3 main bearings on the crankcase AND a 4th tube splits into 3 to lube the barrels, Suzuki later had to pander to the fun police and try to reduce smoke by deleting the one to the barrels in later engines, this worked in that they didn't smoke at all when people were rebuilding them. "Expansion chamber" if you could really call it that is a tube roughly 90mm diameter and a metre long with baffles as random positions down it which go half way across at various angles of rotation but at 90 degrees to it. Perhaps it is supposed to reflect pulses to the ports, not sure. The manual just refers to it as the front muffler. If I had a scanner I could scan parts of a manual as I'm not too good at explanations. Also try a site that's US based "LJ10.com".

Also there are 2 different bell housing patterns if you're chasing a gearbox, most have 4 bolts plus starter bolts, and earlier ones have 5, with a different clutch etc.

The Alternator is the same as the other externally-regulated Suzuki Alts, ie LJ80/81, 1.0lt Sierra, Carry/Super Carry, Alto, Hatch and Mighty Boy. It is likely to be the same as another 70's-80's Japanese car makers Alt (Toyota, Datsun, Mazda), but which particular model I dunno.

Mines the 4 bolt, has oil lines to the cylinders too. Thanks.

Thanks, sourcing one shouldn't be too hard then! I might need to borrow an oxy to make that bracket though. :?

If anyone has a 4 stud LJ50 gearbox, please let me know!

Thanks

Hayden
