hi guys im at the stage when im thinking about what gearing would work best with my set up and would like some help from others :)

i have a sierra with 1.6 efi vit motor 5 speed sierra box to a stock sierra transfer case for now and lux diffs on 36's and maybe go bigger in there near future.

i was chatting with a mate a he was saying instead of going a 6.5 in my tranny go say a 4.9 in there and instead of having stock lux diff ratio go like a 5.29 in the diffs

what do you auszookers folk think would be a good gearing set up for my rig

cheers brodie

it will be a rock crawling based rig but i dont want it to be to low that going between hills or obstacle will be a challenge and to get anywhere other than crawlin

cheers brodie

Go for whats easy to get hold of. 5.29's aren't as common as the 4.8's and 4.5's. Same with the t-fer.....the 6.5's are cheaper. And you have massive tyres. More gearing the better IMO.

ill have 6.5s and 4.8 lux diffs in mine if it ever takes shape.Gives about 115:1 crawl from memory.never have enough if ya wanna drive rocks.
Mine will only be on 35s as im tight.

4.5s are probably the diffs that pop up the most, they are out of gen 2 diesel hiluxes 84-88ish models.Im with fat go the 6.5s

well my lux diffs im not sure on the diff ratio but i want to see what they are and go from there a mate was saying that the 6.5's are breaking and it might put to much strain on the case and blow the case but i ran the 6.5s in my daily driver on 31's and they were awesome

but now my head is just spinning of all these different things i could do and i might go the wrong path and have to pay more money and change shit over and over again which id rather not do.

cheers brodie

people brake cases on 31s,people dont on 35s,37s etc.all depends on how your case is mounted and braced and how you drive. In saying that there has been a few zuks and zuk based buggies over the years with 6.5s that have been flogged and still live.

you will break other bits anyway so whats a case to throw in too :P

im not a big fan of the right boot but ill do it when its needed im hoping that the tyres and spooled rear and locker front with some sort of redustions will allow me to crawl things instead of hitttingg it with alot of speed and force .

like you said i go on zukikrawlers.com and most those blokes are running 6.5s with 5.29 in the diffs

brodie
what would be a good way to mount and brace a sierra transfer?
cheers brodie

i cant answer that one for you as i myself just have 6.5s in my daily zuk on 31s. i have a roctoy ring, gusseted arms and twin locked 1.6 efi etc i have never to this day broken a mount.

best to look at rhetts zuk and redzooks old buggy? bluesuzy off here etc with there mounting and/or custom cradles.Joeblow also. OOZUK??

i think 6.5 and 4.8 will be enough?

Duncan started out with the 1.3L, stock box, 5.14 TC and 5.29's, and he reckons it crawled nicely but it lacked wheel speed when you needed it. This is what I'll be starting out with, until I need a new motor. Youve got the 1.6 efi, stock box and chances are you will have 4.8's, one of the more common ratios. Personally brace your TC with a rock ring and fit the 6.5's and dont worry about the 5.29s for now, you should get good crawl ratio and still have enough power for wheelspeed. Bare in mind if you do have 4.8's and want to go to aftermarket 5.29's you will need to buy a new centre as the aftermarket 5.29's dont fit.

For the time being, stock 1.3L, stock box, 5.14 TC and 5.29's. If I dont like it I'll look for a 1.6 efi and maybe the 6.5's.

chris is telliing me that the 6.5's wont be the best and that i shoudl look at runnign the 4.9 in the case and a different diff ratio

so thats why im in 2 differnt worlds at the moment

Not sure then mate. If you work out youve got 4.8's I would probably still go 6.5's and just brace the box and mounts.

Just because I was bored.

4.9/5.29 = 94.66 crawl
6.5/4.8 = 113.94 crawl
5.14/5.29 = 99.3 crawl

4.9's and 5.29's and your 1.6 shouldnt be too bad, personally I would prefer something lower for crawling but.

ok well where should i start looking for the 6.5's cause chris said he dont deal with them anymore maybe keep and eye out in the forsale section?

and should i still pull a center out to find exactly what ratio i do have in the lux diffs??

Yer apparently Trallgear tend to be wankers to do business with  Lowrange is your next best bet. Personally I would find out what centres you have, just so you know. Do you know whether the original lux had a petrol or diesel motor. You can turn the driveshaft and count the number of turns of the tyres, or pull the centre and do the same but count the turns of the crown wheel. Appsie may know for sure but I think you can tell by looking at the outside of the centre housing and counting the ribbing or working out if the pinion gear is offset or not, something like that anyway.

Edit : If you feel like pulling the centre apart below is the difference you can tell between the housings.

Below is a 4.3 or 4.5 housing which has the pinion gear recessed under the left hand side.

Below is a 4.8 housing which has the pinion gear more centred and no recess on the left side.

I vote 6.5's but I have no experience what so ever to make that call. if you were running an auto the higher gearing wouldn't matter as much I beleive.

jack the back of the car up, mark the tailshaft at exactly the lowest point. mark the tire on exactly the same spot. in nuetral turn the tire 1 full rotation and count the number of times your tail shaft turns ;)

6.5s
4.88
Than when you keep braking 4.88 get some nitro 5.29s and fit to 4.5 centers

My diff ratio is 4.56 I think I'll stay with them and run 6.5's and see how i go would you have a pic of your transfer case mount 11_evl?

Cheers brodie
