Post subject:  VVT Manual Jimny owners beware

Ive always known that the VVT Jimny gearboxes were weak But in the last 6 months have had 3 fail. Yesterday removed a box from a customers car that had done 42000km 3 months out of waranty to replace bearings as it had done the usual failer rear countershaft bearing.

Every gear in the box the case hardening had worn through.

So removed a gearbox from a rollover wreck that had done 50000kms and poped it apart to check it to find the bearings had not failed yet but the case hardening had started to fail on all the gears aswell.

Now we are rebuilding the origional box.

My suggestion is perhaps synthetic oil to reduce wear as every gear and shaft in the box isn't cheap. Any one else seen this ?

You know who alien and your free to say. Im sure Suzuki Aus do know about it As all the parts to replace the gearbox are readily avaliable in Aus, That must say something.

VVT gearboxes are one to themself they are 1 to 1 in 5th gear where as the non VVT boxes are the same as a sierra(have overdrive). The VVT box weighs alot less than the other aswell. They are a real bacward box where the input shaft is the main shaft and the out put is only short. You can not even put an early style box in them as the chassie is different along with the diffratios are much higher alowing 5th gear being at the 1 to 1 ratio. The centre shaft has a different spline count and shorter making them VVT only

ohhh noo :O we have been having problems with our gear box selecting reverse and alot of the other gears can be hard to select they go in but require effort of another pump of the clutch untill its warmed up. might changed out the oil that the old mechanic had used.

That's not even your post I quoted..
It's not even a laughing emo con.
Confused, because I have never seen different chassis's between the Vvt & non Vvt Jim's........ " :? "
I can't see Suzuki making an entirely different chassis for a eng that is the same bar a cam pulley & an oil control valve..

Give me a break im a thats why I became a mechanic (not good at spelling lol)

If you stick your head under a VVT version the gearbox mount is behind the cross member, Non VVT the mount is welded infront of the member make it a bucket load easier to get the box out on the VVT.

I only found out because was going to try a non VVT box int it but it fell short of the cross member

You still have the car at work?? Can yo please take some pic's for me??

I can't remember there being a difference in the chassis.......

Oh, shit g/box's isn't just the Vvt's, any M engined jim's suffer from shit box's...

You got me worried now. I'm off to Moreton Island in a couple of months and the Jimny has done 90000kms. I'm about to get it serviced, is there any precaution or checks that can be done before it fails?

G/box oil is due every 45k, so should be changed at 90k..
