What are the limitations to the rims they can be fixed to?
Does it have to be steel rims or can you fit them in Alloys too?
Is there anything i should be wary of?

Cheers, 5ierra.

Alloys have been know to split the rims off.

WTF does that mean?

I run Staun internal beadlocks in my alloy Globe Bathurst wheels without a drama.....

sounds like serious bullshit to me.
how??????

Rims being the outer bead holding lips.

Something i stumbled across looking at details/pictures/suitability/history about my new Ultra Rogue wheels.

I suppose it all depends on weight and what your putting the car through.

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

There are very few limitations for what rims they can be fitted to. Alloys are no problem.

Many people have found them quite unreliable though. I wouldn't run them. They work all the time the hold air, which is not always the case.

Steve.

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

if they cant handle the weight and 20- 30 psi internal pressure of a beadlock, how are these rims supposed to handle hundreds of psi of cornering pressure, potholes etc??

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

Yeah I'd hardly call that Pirate thread conclusive evidence.

But if you are running alloys offroad, you should choose one with a thick bead anyway, regardless of your intent to fit internal beadlocks.....

so the consensus is Steel...?

The two rims I'm looking at atm are:

Pro Comp

Mickey Thompson

Can get the mickey t's with an imitation beadlock aswell but don't want to pay the extra $300 for them :P

The Procomp's are hub cap/dress rim's, not bead lock's....

5ierra, I'd seriously consider some KMC beadlocks.

Image

This guy:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KMC-XD-B ... 2202wt_824

He also offers 15X8 beadlocks for the same price $255 per wheel, and was very helpful on shipping.

A vic club member bought a set from this vendor. They mounted easily and don't leak at all. It took about 15 minutes to mount each tyre ourselves.

In my opinion, they are miles, miles better than internal beadlocks. I own 4 sets (yes, really, 4 sets) of mechanical beadlocks, the oldest set I've owned for 11 years.

Just my thoughts.

And they are illegal for onroad use. But so are internals. Difference being you cannot see the internals.

Having said this, the KMC's are a far better option IMO.

True and true, but there's lots of guys rocking fakelocks now.

Serious question - has anyone been defected for beadlocks alone (i.e not oversized/illegal tyres, but the actual beadlocks themselves?

My dad ran internals on his Hummer (which didn't come with beadlocks or runflats - go figure) and they were fine, but everyone else I know who's had them has found them leaky.

My rims are fake locks

But look fairly easy to modify

What about a nice set of Walker Evans? hmmmmmm.

Author:  Gwagensteve [ Fri Feb 11, 2011 8:51 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

Walkers are beautifully made and look VERY strong. ( I have a set, not currently on a car) but they are quite expensive. KMC's are much cheaper and plenty strong enough for a Sierra.

Steve.

PS Both KMC's and Walkers require whacky wheelnuts, like many alloys. I'm looking at converting to 14mm VW studs so I can avoid the nasty wheelnuts.

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

id rather run external bead locks as there stronger and we have found that internal bead locks still allow dirt in the bead, which will let air out.
external requires more modifieing of the rim but will work better in the long run IMO

just be aware if you want to run internals that the bead of your tire isnt rough or sharp as it can ware through your tube,
if so jsut grind the bead smooth...

Haha yeh i realise that :P thought they looked good :)

Steve, those rims look nice, but I'd rather internals

1) because they can be balance (not sure about alloy bead locks but i know steels are hard/impossible to balance)
2) As pete mentioned, legalities.

But, with that said, they are nice rims... :D

If i could get the size and offset i want it may be something to look into :)
Have a couple of weeks til i order.

I actually think the KMC's would balance better than internals, given that they are CNC machined parts.... :?

Yeh, thats why i said i wasnt sure about the alloy ones :P

The more i look at them the more i like them, would like to know exact specs on them though.. might try and get in touch with him early next week.

Without meaning to be rude.....

The yanks fit these to their $250K comp rigs and smash through the desert at speeds approaching insane. Do you really think that your shitty little sierra is too good for them?  :peaceout:

I'd be more concerned if they come in a 5x139.7 PCD and what offsets they are available in :D

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

So why the hell are beadlocks illegal for on road use anyway?

Is it a wheel balance issue? Is it to do with being able to drive on a flat? (or thinking you can but you cant?) Is it prone to damaging the tyre to the point of failure? Is it the danger of a bolt coming loose and hitting someone? (If so then why are internals illegal also?)

I may have overlooked something glaringly obvious but why? (google isn't giving me a straight answer either)

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

I cannot see why alloy or factory steel beadlocks should be ileagal either???
A modified steel rim yeah sure, who did the welding is it true , brittle etc etc
but a one piece alloy rim?
anyone

^^ sounds like it would be worth calling the DoT and asking... or go past an inspection place ans ask them, as if you get defected theyre the ones that are going to pass or not pass you =P

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

no idea either why external bead locks re illegal, in the worst of the cases they keep the tyre attach to the rim..... I have seen many accidents or car on the side of the road that barely avoid crash because their tyre "explode" and end up out of the rim :?

I think the reason why internal bead locks re illegal is because you have to drill a hole in the rim in order to fit the second valve, so youll be doing modifications to the rim... in some kind of way :?

and well Staun actually makes some alloy rims already with the two valve system..... bit ugly but aint that bad.... donno if they do ones to fit zooks

externals are illegal because of the modifieing of them rim, yet a set of walker evans are external and there still illegal,

Post subject:  Re: Internal Bead Locks

There are restrictions (ADRs) to the number of pieces of a rims construction, and the methods used.
Bolt together rim components - ie: beadlocks, do not meet those requirements.
