i think you might have a problem fitting a "chip" to a carby powered Sierra, even if you were running an EFI, it's a little box of snake oil.

You are better off spending $25 on new spark plugs rather than buying one of these and finding out it is nothing more then a $0.05 resistor in a pretty box... LOL
This 'chip' (it isn't really) - when connected across terminals of your air flow meter decreases the circuits resistance which makes the ECU think there is more/denser air flowing through it causing your ECU to richen the air/fuel mix accordingly. I can't see how this would give you better fuel economy or a big gain in performance if your engine is tuned correctly.

You know what will be a better investment?
One of those air intake tornado, or an electric supercharger.
I'm not sure if it's the same one but my mates sister stupidly bought something similar, He opened it up and all it was, was a resistor and an LED. Basic electronics to make a blinking light.
You should send him a message asking him how effective it will be on a carby engine, how much power gain, torque figures etc.

As stupid as it sounds, why don't we have such things as electric superchargers?
I'm guessing because of the associated losses involved? As well as the need for it to be tied directly to engine rpm?

I was trying to ask a half serious question, if we can make half the stuff that actually gets made, why the hell don't we have actual viable proper electric versions of stuff like this?
I guess because it's just way easier to have it powered by the engine directly.
Also, what about some sort of compressor (yes just plain old air compressor) with a tank and regulator? Too much of a pita + not capable? EDIT: Basically talking about a supercharger anyway I guess)
Theoretically all we're trying to do is ram more air (and consequently oxygen) into the engine right?
I know I'm simplifying it way too much but has it ever actually been tried?

Actually, there are such things as electric superchargers, according to an acquaintance who works for Bosch in a technical role. We are yet to see them on a production engine, but Bosch offer them as an emissions solution to boost VE (volumetric efficiency) at low revs or during transients, for example, under the boost threshold of a turbo engine.
They are not intended to add to maximum horsepower though.
A proper electric supercharger (not an ebay snake oil special) would be a very powerful emissions/drivability tool. It wouldn't be tied to engine RPM at all, and with a variable speed drive, it could provide totally seamless operation.
It could only ever be a short term solution for a drivability/emissions hole though - as you pointed out, the losses involved mean it's impossible for it to increase overall output once alternator losses and the efficiency of the electric motor are taken into account.
Maybe for 5 seconds peak or so it's quite feasible, under a factory tuning type of scenario.

Very theoretical but...
If you put a switch on the accelerator bracket that only switched to on when accel was fully depressed then you would hook this up to the blower.
The piping in the engine bay would require a standard air intake but with a non return valve fitted and then the blower going through another intake and then to the carby.
This would mean the blower is only active under full acceleration...sort of.
or for that extra cool factor you could have a button on the dash labelled "TURBO" that activates it too..lol.

That would work, assuming the electric supercharger could maintain positive pressure at the CFM the engine was consuming, and that's very debatable. It's very easy to create huge CFM, but against any sort of restriction, it gets much harder.
even if that was possible, if the 'charger was adding 5kw, it would create about twice that drag on the crank because of the inefficiencies of converting crank HP into electricity, (alternator) and then back to mechanical power (motor on the supercharger)
That's why I suggested it's useable for small transients only, to allow the charging system to catch up.

This is a quick word from one of the more expensive, apparently tried and tested electric superchargers. Notice how they mention nothing about current draw...
The Force Flow Electric Intake Supercharger works as an axial flow compressor which sucks air into the intake a rate much faster than your engine could do on its own. The Force Flow electric supercharger systems have a super powerful custom electric motor that draws power from the vehicles battery to drive an impellor built into a 4.0 inch aluminium housing. The impellor spins at 27000 rpm (4.0) or 43000 rpm (X4) to draw in air at more than 800 CFM (cubic feet per minute), it is the difference in air flow that your vehicle could naturally breathe to what is pumped in by the Force Flow system that determines the boost in pressure in your intake. This extra air is measured by your vehicles air flow metering system or air pressure sensor which is read by the vehicles ECU (engine control unit) which in turn injects more fuel into the cylinders. This extra air/fuel mixture is what gives the engine its extra power.
As an example, a 2.0 litre engine naturally draws about 200 CFM, the difference of over 800 CFM (4.0) creates approximately 2.0 psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure boost. This results in approximately 7% gain in overall power output, kilowatts or horsepower.

Back when I was interested in rc cars and electrics. A couple mates and i did some solid research on doing this using turbine style motors used for rc jet planes. Basically it worked out that to get a motor powerfull enough to make any noticable difference you would not only be draining the battery but also adding considerable drain to your alternater and negating most of the power increase there. Also the wiring for such a motor gets really friggin hot, fire risk would have to be a real consideration.
Yes it could be done. We figired we might be able to get a 3psi boost on a small engine for less than $100 and a half hours work but any small gain just wouldnt be worth it.
