How can we tell if the transfer case has a crawler gear as my LOW RANGE seem to "crawl" or go at fast walking speed lol cant even use it on sand have to use HIGH range |

Post up here with what size tyres you are running, what speed you're doing at what revs in what gear (for a couple of different gears+speeds+rpm) and someone might be able to tell you alternatively, try and calculate it yourself using this http://www.grimmjeeper.com/metric_gears.html and the method I mentioned above. |

tyre size is 28-29" on high range doing ~100km in 5th rpm @ 4k not sure if accurate I dont know what the axel gear ratio |

if it has crawler gears, u can normal take off in say 3rd low with out much trouble |

if he's on 29's, should be able to take off in 2nd high with 6.5's. But then there is 4.9 and inbetweens.. I could take off in 5th low with NO trouble on 33's 6.5's,3.7's. It was lower than 1st high..(from memory) |

You can spin the output if you can disconnect the drive lines. Put it in low and spin the input shaft 1 turn. count the turns the output makes in 4 low. If the input turns onces, and the output turns 4 times, you have a four to 1. 1 turn input to 6 1/2 turns out put = 6.5 to 1 |

You are right. You have to spin the input 4 times to make the output go around once with a 4:1,hence reduction instead of over drive lol. Making lots of those mistakes today. |

I don't see what was wrong with my idea? Sure he would need a gps to be able to reference it properly but if he actually gave a decent set of data points then it wouldn't be too hard to plot??? Yes I agree it's easier to take the shafts off and spin the output but that requires tools! |

If you have an open rear diff you can jack up one wheel and support with an axle stand and then put gearbox in neutral... Hubs unlocked... Transfer in 4lo and turn the shafts to count the ratio.... No need to remove any bolts. |

This idea works great too, nothing wrong with it at all :mrgreeb: I have used the same calcs. Teracis wrote: Post up here with what size tyres you are running, what speed you're doing at what revs in what gear (for a couple of different gears+speeds+rpm) and someone might be able to tell you
alternatively, try and calculate it yourself using this http://www.grimmjeeper.com/metric_gears.html and the method I mentioned above. I had an idea, but was not completely sure of my gears. So I input what I thought was right and checked the speed I should be doing at 3500 RPM, it turned out spot on. (after I accounted for my tires being 33's but measuring 32" That is something to keep in mind, you have to use the actual measurement of your tires for the gear calcs to work right. Most tires do not measure even close to what they are labeled. I have seen 34" tires brand new measure 32". The worst of the lot are 33' inch tires.I have measured several brand new unmounted 33" tires, at 31", and some at 34-35". new 33 inch tires measure all over the place depending on the brand. |

Yeah 6.5's are good for rocks, and crawling downhill no brake needed. I normally use highrange on sand. Even in 2wd |

Only takes 20 minutes or so to swap them around. |

yep that exactly what i might do they pretty cheap 2nd hand I will eventualy get used to it, starting out 1st time 4wd might need an all rounder I use 4H all the way on sand but can ever get up steep dunes, yet mate with stock transfer case just cruise along lol makes me sad lol would a 4.9 reduction gear be a good compromise? |
