G'Day Zookers Has anyone bothered to repower their zook with a diesel, was thinking of doing it thats all, and was wondering if anyone over here has done it, Before all the questions why I want to do this, the answer is I kike diesels....................nuff said All the conversions seem to use one of the various vw diesel engines, which beg's another question, does anyone know a good source for one of these engines as they seem to be pretty thin on the ground over here, or are there any other diesels that'll fit Any help would be great Thank's |

Nobody does it cause taking a 1000kg 4wd and pulling a 60kg engine out and putting a 150kg one in ends up making it a lead tipped arrow the drives bad with gearing that doesnt suit a low reving engine that VW engine from America isnt available here and I believe the Peugot one will hot the brake booster in RHD config |

Thats solvable. Remote booster. Gearing would be hard to get right though |

I'll check some figures Thank's for the replies so far Whatever you do, seriously consider the implications of all that extra weight over the front end. If you can find the coin for it, try and get a CRDi motor with alloy block. |

See not everything is a good idea, diesels work as well in sierras as mens doodles in other mens bums I'll assume your comments come from experience And if a diesel is such a bad idea in a sierra, then why are they factory fitted in international markets? If you address the gearing and weight issues, a diesel sierra would be fantastic. |

Surely there are some comparably small and light diesel engines out there? Not that it's really comparable, but I've always wondered if anyone's build a 4wd and thrown in a truck gearbox, as in the kind with 3 ranges that things like semi's use. Specifically so that you could have any gear available on the fly, and some ridiculously low gears at that! |

You would need to be building a pretty 4wd to make it work! |

Road Ranger 9-10-11-13-15 speed, 3 range boxes weigh 500Kg. They are a non synchro box and would never be suitable for a 4WD unless it is a Kamaz or similar huge thing. RR's are a lot of fun when you know how to slam through the gears though.... |

if you want a diesel an they are avalible in japan they import cars from japan that can't be registered here but are used for spares find some one in your area that is in the bussiness an see if they can source one for you they usually cut them in half an stuff them into containers |

I saw this the other day: http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/pri ... E429E873C5 2 Liter TD Nissan conversion. It has an auto box. Might be worth a look for $5200. Sorry about the messy link. |

Thanks for that rwicks10 intersting, albeit a vit not a sierra, for me I think sourcing the engine is going to be the hard bit, firstly as small diesels haven't been popular down here, and to find one in a wrecker is going to be nye on impossible so maybe as dogbox says I'll have to source one from an importer. The weight issue is a concern, but I thought maybe givew the sierra a lift with heavier spring under it, it'll harshen the ride up, I guess if I can get my greasy little mits on an engine the weight issue will be sorted on the fly so to speak, trial and error and all that, to get a good compromise. I'd like a VW or Peugeot engine in it, but I'll certainly research the OEM fitted ones and maybe contact a few importers over east and see what moneis I'm looking at. At the end of the day the suzi is mainly my commuter to and from work, but I'd also like to be able to do some weekend casmping trips in it instead of dragging the cruiser out all the time, and doing what I do over here in the west I'm after about 1000k's of range between stops fully loaded, i.e 75L of fuel and fridge and other comping gear etc. Plus I think it'd be cool to have a diesel sierra something different and all that. So okay lets have a look at the other side of the coin, and say I stay with a petrol powered re-power, my thought would be to put a 1.6 Baleno engine in it, the coil pack type, will I get the range I want out of one of those, i.e I'll want 12k's per litre, its an easier conversion, and its always got to be considered, but my first preference will always be a diesel because its hardly been done and I think its worth investigating seriously, as if it proves viable it could be a popular conversion and could prove to be another string to the mighty suzuki bow, any more constructive thoughts would be great as there is already plenty of food for thought here, it'd be great if we could nut a bit of stuff out and I can get a plan together and maybe get it done. Cheers |

The non synchro thing would be a pita though wouldn't it. |

my mate had a1.8 gemi diesel in his lwb (capsize)when he got it. went ok with the 36 and 6.5 but now he has a 3.1 td mu engine. Its got so much power that it spins 39 down the street in 4th. problems are -1 the car weighs like 1800kg -2 car can only do 80 because the high range reduction -3 keeps snaping bundy axels like there toothpicks i think a diesel would be good on road or long trips but the short rev range would suck offroad |

From what I can find that guy has used a Nissan xtrail 2.0 litre td 127kW of power and 360Nm of torque from the manual transmission and 110kW of power and 320Nm of torque from the automatic transmission. I have contacted the seller for some more info I'll see if he replys |

The most effective diesel are the modern European passenger car diesels as these have decent power, economy and a usable rev range that doesn't require massive gearing headaches to work. Problem is that most of these motors are not really available in Australia and the pathetic quailty of our domestic diesel fuel means they probably would just shit themselves anyway. The yanks love the VW gold conversions, but i dont think we ever got that motor over here. You could try to find or import am motor, but the cost and the fact it would never be legal (Motor would have to meed ADR's and unless you wanna for out for that) might cause drama's. Have a search through pirate for diesel converstion on zooks, there is quite a few there. Layto.... |

Nice one Inbits A bit more power than I anticipated, but that aint a bad thing. As for the revs, well yeah a diesel can be limited if you like to drive with the tacho above 4grand, but for what I do its unlikely I'll need to hit the red line, plus you have a heap of oomph at say 1250 revs, thats one reason I like diesels all the torque is low down, I'll have to chuck her on the freeway and see what revs she pulls at a 100k's, which has just brought another possible question to my mind, can you get overdives for suzi's, still thinking out loud here, maybe if an x-trail's engine fits, maybe chuck the cog swapper in aswell and a lot of the gearing issues should go away, never thought of an x-trail's donk nice one weeheee could be a go, there should be some cheap'ish wrecked ones around after all its a datsun, ooopps sorry nissan, this could be a very interesting project, okay there's going to be a ton of issues than I haven't thought about, but thats where the fun starts. In my mind nothing worth while is ever easy |

Cheers The major concern with the added weight over the front end is not if the suspension can hold up the weight, or even if the spring rates are correct. The biggest issue, which is also the hardest to solve, is the added weight and how it effects the harmonics of the front axle. With every beam or rigid axle vehicle you get some degree of oscilation from movement in the bushes, flex of the axle housing/ components etc, road surface and so on. Adding weight to a vehicle without considering any of the above can turn a small; even normally un-noticatble vibration into a massive death wobble that feels like it will literally tear the front diff from the vehicle. Having said that, you may find you have no issues at all with death wobbles. On the baleno motor, you won't get 12km/L. Work off getting 10, then be pleasantly suprised if its better. |

Layto.... Not true. Aust Diesel fuel is now Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel and is Euro IV compliant. The availability of this fuel is the reason that many euro-sourced cars and trucks are now appearing on the Aust market. Many of the heavy trucks that are coming out (Scania, MAN, Volvo, etc) are Euro V compliant, with fuel ecomony numbers that beat Falcons and Commodores! |
