the steering in my coily has suddenly developed tight spots, i jacked the front end up and it is definately coming from the steering box. Is this a common problem? if so can i fix it myself or would i need to get the box rebuilt?.

Pull the shaft out between the fire wall and the box and try moving the steering uni by hand. One will probably be stiff.

Where it gets brake fluid dropped on it.

Time for a new steering shaft.

The uni's aren't really replaceable - they are pressed in and very hard to remove. I replaced the unis in the steering shaft of my Gwagen, but they are much bigger than a sierra uni.
