Hey guys, I'm nearing the end of my injection saga and about to put pen to paper and work out the next part of my build. coils. So I'm going to build parallel links up top and reverse triangulated on the bottom of my front diff, and a standard tri 4-link rear end (ala pete's new yellow 40). And I'm keen on the idea of some tidy looking coil overs. It will be easier and there is more room for fitting shocks when the car will be 50-75mm above standard height. My question is will i be able to get a reasonable ride out of any of these? I have heard that air shocks are pretty rough on road, and that they unload pretty awesomely on angles, so does anyone know of coil overs that will fit my needs. I'm not after allot of flex, I'd be happy with 10"-12" on each corner.... let me know what you know

I don't think air shocks are legal on road unless you are using a coil or leaf spring aswell.
COilovers can be approved though, and offer alot more tunability.

lots of perfectly road legal cars using pnuematic and hydraulic suspension, i'd be interested in the reasoning why if they cant be legal
FWIW an airshock can be adjusted for spring rate, bump and rebound, its just so many people jsut bang em on and think thats that.

My mates patrol runs air shocks on the rear and is certified.
Must have the sway bar connected though or it rolls around like a boat.
If u run them just make sure u have a winch on the diff so u can pull the diff down when needed
Ps I have seen some king of the hammers rigs run them so they cant be to bad at speed

I have a mate with a mega modified toyota that runs fully individually in cab adjustable airbags and rancho's no springs, it is awesome. Road regoed, fully engineered and DOT inspected and approved. 82 Hilux on a 80 series cruiser chassis.

Most people I know who use air shocks make the mistake of having a common valves, bad move, use a separate nipple for each shock.
Reason is, air will move from one shock to the other, so roll is extenuated, so is a bad load etc. When you load one side heavier with separate valves, sweet as, just add extra air on the low side.

ahhh ha yep, foot in mouth again.
Forgive me, its hard sitting at anchor in Great Keppel Island.
Even so, you would still have to have seperate controls for each shock, ??

They are set and forget, you gas them up to a pressure to give ride height, you can also change the valves inside to alter your shack valving and the oil level to alter your spring rate, pretty cool bits of kit for the money

What sort of price are we talking.
Are they something to look into for my maruti build. I have never heard of them, I was going to go for rancho 9000s

about $250 a piece, but they replace coils not leaves
you could look at fox 2.0 for similar money are a straight shock, note youll think they are shit unless you put teh effort into tuning them, being a fox they are like a Dirt bike fork minus the spring inside

I need something so as to be able to stiffen them up hard for engineering, swerve and recovery, then when I get passed, (35s) be able to lessen them and have a good shock.
I could do lots of things, but I do not want to buy shocks for engineering only, what are Fox 2s like

they arent knob adjust like a koni or rancho, its pull apart and replace parts
cant you just use stiffer springs, stiff shocks and soft springs will still handle shit

I want to be able to fly, and land gently, so long soft springs, with the ability to change shock tension, preferably in cab while on the go.
I am still mulling over YJ or RUFF, got me WT axles ordered, its coming together, not fast enuf, but its giving me time to sort out springs.
IF useless rocky road had have pulled their fingers out, i would have YJ installed, but they sooooo slow, and I do not like the other YJ set ups available.

I am talking about engineering only, dont care what your junk rides like, I have a vit so I win
while you are looking, check out their bumpstops too, will suit what you want to do perfectly

never heard of that one, I just love the sandhills at coffin bay huge great big things, when Im home, I go playing most every day, lots I cannot do, as my suspension is lacking.
Its good, but can be a whole lot better, the flights are fun, the landings are a bit harsh, and as for leaping over razor backs, only small ones till I get softer.
Do you know Coffins ?

cheers guys for the comments and ideas. So pretty much, the conclusion is a coilover will ride better or on par with a coil spring, if valved and has the right rate springs in them.
here are the shocks im looking at

the rest on the poly performance website all seem $100 dearer and not any better.....

What length are you shooting for? The 5/8 shaft units only go to 10" travel.
Also, get you coils from over their too. I got my Eibach coils for $65US each ($130US per corner) and its a fair site cheaper than buying them here!
