Post subject:  Need more power!!!

So after hoping out of a 180sx with mild work into a Vitara 1.6 16v EFI, I've noticed that she requires loads more work from my right foot to get going, especially up hills. And when the 32"s or 33"s go on I know it will only get worse. So what are my options for upgrading? What are the best power upgrade options? I do have a Garret t25 turbo sitting at home, haha.

I also thought of gearing. What are my best options for gearing?

Is power or gearing better?

Cheers guys

put power in one hand, gearing in the other then put your hands together!

You're gonna want gearing to drive those bigger feet but power is always fun.

Grab your t25, seal up the internal wastegate and run an external off the manifold dumping straight down. It'll sound awesome and snap axles!
Back in the day I ran a GT-R with twin HKS 3540's with external wastegates. One dumping out just behind the front left tyre (through the quarter panel) the other dumping straight under the car. My buddies GTS-4 ended up with a nice scorch mark on his drivers door from getting a little too close! Anyway, my point is, power is nice but sometimes you get burnt!

Turbo it!! haha bit of work and Im not sure how well the vitara motors stand up to it but low boost should be fine. Not sure if you can get a chip for your ecu though- if not you'll need an aftermarket ecu..

You could always just put an sr20 in and be done with it!

Probably want to get gearing if you go that big I'd say, gearing can get pretty expensive though

A zook is not a sports car.

You have to remember that you can't just chuck a hair dryer onto a NA motor and expect lots of power without drawbacks.

Not knowing the Vit ecu's I assume that you'd need to go aftermarket. There are plenty to choose from and you don't have to spend a lot of money.

One old trick that I have used to turbo NA motors is to add a second head gasket (or get a thick one made up) to lower the compression. You will lose some of your bottom end power but you can run more boost! Probably not ideal for a 4x4 but as it's a vitara I assume you're a hair dresser who wants to get to the salon a bit quicker so it shouldn't matter

there's a guy on here called oozuk he has done a g16b turbo setup it has a good power and torque range... It is a zook though so your limited my old one had a gti swift motor with a t2560 on it and I loved the power and torque but it also had 6.5.1 gears with 32s.

Do I need to say it again?

More power is a poor substitute for proper gearing. Fix the gearing first, then add power if you still feel the need...

Lol, I didn't mean everything had to be related to a turbo setup. I was Also wondering about exhaust setups, cams, intakes? Are these mods worth it? What are 6.5.1 gears? How much is gearing usually?

Someone on here once said "Don't try and turn a donkey into a race horse. You'll just end up with a pissed off donkey."

That about sums up your quest for more power.
Respect what you've got, drive it for what it is.

Agreed. But a 4AGZE conversion would be perfect for a vitara

i think that vitaras are alot more conducive to more power, and going faster than sierras are.

i personally wouldnt go with boosting the motor thats in it. alot of work to get right, i straight motor swap from some thing else would be better.

lexus v8 for example :D

Lol Lexus v8s were sooo popular in hiluxs and 4runners. Im not sure if one would fit into a vit lol. There's nothing wrong with chasing more power. Why not make what you've got better?

power chasing is fine if you know what your doing, and do it in the right way

It might be easier to put hilux diffs in the 180sx, if you wanted to go offroad at all?

Lol that's why I'm asking the questions. Im not after axle snapping power, but enough to cruise up a hill and remain in the same gear and be able overtake without needing 2km of room.

Thanks guys

so your talking about a 180sx mildly worked?

about 160-170 kw?

throw a 2.5 GV motor on the vitara and you will have about the same power to weight ratio.. in fact, just track down a J24 from a gv and it will hammer. boost isnt always the answer

If you have a 1.6EFI and can't cruise up decent hills or overtake when your tyres are 31" or smaller then I'd say your engine has something wrong with it...

Have you serviced it and replaced the usual items? Is your AFM ok? Is your O2 sensor ok? Is your cat. converter blocked?

My G16b, with stock gearing on 31's would happily pull 120kph+ if i wanted. And could pull on a 1.6 lancer at the lights(not that you would). With 4.9s itll happily cruise up steep hills in 5th.. How much power do you really need. Id be scared of much more in my current setup, GB wouldnt like it either. Sure a sierra weighs less, but in the end if you have correct gearing there shouldnt be an issue

The u2 sensor is brand new. The exhuast does make a rattle when engaging the clutch at low rpm, maybe it is my cat. I'll hav a look into it tomorrow night after work.

Thanks again

how does a u2 sensor work? Does it sound an alarm when it registers too much Bono?

X 2
My Carby 8valve 1.6 Vit had heaps of power, hills were no problem, hell i could even drag off other cars, and did it a fair bit, ha ha
So your EFI 16valve 1.6 should fly along... must be something not working right...
As for exhaust upgrade, definitely get it done, it makes a fair bit of difference, if its the old stock exhaust still on it, the cat may be blocked up, so yeah, new 2in exhaust is a good mod to do, i get it done on every zook i have owned ! :D
