i posted this somewhere else but it aint a strange noise so.... 2nd gear using the engine braking it sounds like it is backfiring, does this mean it's runing too rich on fuel or not getting enough or is there somethin else? all knowledge and and unworldly ideas appreciated. Grizz |

too rich retarded timing (most likely) hole in exhaust |

Sierra or Vit? The spring loaded joing between the manifold and the exhaust pipe can let air in. I've had that problem before a couple of times. |

Windows up, air con on and stereo turned up loud.... problem solved! Seriously though, probably not worth worrying about. If it gets worse then maybe start looking for a possible problem. If it starts spitting flames then get a flame arrester for the tip. If the exhaust falls off then there was probably a weakness there somewhere. |

did you measure the timing while going down hill? jam a wet rag in the tailpipe at idle will show up any holes a lot easier |

Mine constantly pops/backfires every few seconds when engine braking in any gear. |

Most Vitara's exhaust manifold's are cracked between the 3 & 4 outlets.. This will cause the problem you are having.. Get a set of extractors for it and you'll be much happier. |

isn't popping/gurgling also caused by lack of back pressure? |

Yes Mike that's right, often when you fit a larger free flowing exhaust the reduction in exhaust velocity and backpressure will cause poping and gurgling sounds from the exhaust during deceleration. |
