Anyone ever had a handbrake that just wanted to stay on??? I release mine and it bloody springs half way back up! Its obviously a spring somewhere causing it - any ideas where to look? |

have a look from underneath or from the top (not sure in sierra's), the spring may be caught on something making it spring back. i hate brakes to.... |

What does the weight of the handbrake feel like, as in, is the thing firm, meaning the spring is still attached, does it CLIK into place nicely, have you been out fukkin about and maybe a stone or stick has lodged itself somewhere so as the ratchet cannot grip and hold it in place. |

On a side note, the moon is the closest it gets, every 18 years it is as close as this, so to all, if your interested, get out and watch moonrise tonight, it will be huge. Im in Gladstone, just got here, 8/8ths overcast and rain, damit. All the southerners should have a most spekky view. |

I had this same problem in a 75 series cruiser ute at work the other week. We just replaced the handbrake cable/assembly ($35 from repco) and it fixed the problem. The kit was from handle back to the rear brakes. |

suziblu - handbrake feels normal to pull and release other than having more upward spring (it never used to have any)... sometimes its springy enough that the brake lever comes up 1/2 way! Im guessing the cable must be catching along the way somewhere and the cable's tension is whats pulling it up??? as for the moon - yeah we're heading out tonight to take pics =) ZookZilla96 - cheers mate - how hard of a job is it? obviously a hoist would come in handy... |

it took 1/2-45mins and we did it on the ground. there should only be the 4 bolts holding the handle down then disconnect the cables of the brakes aswell as a few point where it is bolted down and it should come out then reverse the order for putting the new one in. |

When i had this problem the cable was kinking under the handbrake lever when i tried to lower the handbrake. Worth a look if you havnt already. |

interesting... i've just spent like an hour under / in / around the handbrake. i loosened the 4 bolts around the lever and tried moving it forward with the slack in the holes (moved about 1mm) as i saw the rubber boot was stretching when the brake was down, and when i pulled it up the tension came off the rubber. i then spent like 30mins with a sharp screwdriver and needlenose pliers breaking away a bit of the boot so it didnt need to stretch to let the lever past it... this helped heaps, but its still coming back up to the first notch on the ratchet when i first release the brake. then, given a few wiggles it settles down to the floor and only springs up a tiny bit. kinked cable makes sense. i cant see it kinking from underneath but its possible that its kinked inside the line somewhere on the way back. |

I have had hand-break probs, found, in my situation, that is was simply, believe it or not, dry stuff, a can of CRC lots of spray, work the lever lots, finger on the button, lift, let go, wriggle so as to feel it slot in, same when down, do it a few times, spray that is, and all seems to come right. |

lol so its a help, woohooooo. Mate, sorry if I insult your intelligence, but, have you crawled under and wriggled everything, left nothing unturned. I seem to spend a fair bit of time under my zook doing the, thigh bone connected to the, knee bone, the knee-er, well you know what i mean. Does seem to make a lot of sense to me, and quite often, I am under the car, the light suddenly turns on, and, yaaaaa, Im out of there, problem solved. |

yeah i've wiggled everything and nothings catching or binding etc thats visible... but of course i cant see the cable inside the shroud - my guess would be years of mud/water/crap is in there and could easily have kinked the cable. |

Things that make you go, hmmmm Im outa suggestions mate, not that any were of any value. One last one, have you tried going for a drive, with you hand holding the brake lever down, and feeling if it is a heavy or light thing doing this. |

its the same no matter the conditions - however if i use the brake pedal while the hand brake is on the spring effect is greater when taking the hand brake off (ie: foot still on pedal). its weird and i dont like it. lol |

its weird and i dont like it. lol ??? I didn't think the hand brake and foot brake were connected in any way. The only thing common to them is the rear drum they push on isn't it? How does it go if you disconnect the cable from the drums? does it still spring back? Maybe you have something lodged in the drum part of the system? |

I had a similar problem once. Took it to some kiwi bloke and works fine now
