I have been trying to work out why the steering on my Suzuki Vitara has been binding and I think it was the return to centre steering dampener.

But while I was trying to find out what it was I had the front wheels off the ground and was spinning them to hear any strange noises and with the front hubs free I could hear a slight clicking noise (same noise from both sides a wee louder on the passenger side).
With them Locked there is no clicking noise.

Should there be a slight noise with the hubs free or no noise at all??

There shouldn't be any noise with the hubs locked or unlocked. Might pay to pull the hubs out and take a look, the hubs may not be completely releasing. Just undo the 6 little bolts and pull.

Check the uni joints on the steering, one of the guys off here had a uni let go whilst doing 100km/h, not a good result but could have been a lot worse.

That is my main worry that something will let go.
I dropped the Vit off at my mates workshop today.
The binding was getting bad, it would cross over the centre line on some corners before the steering would come good.
