I've been doing a lot of 100kph travelling (well, nearly) and having some terrible pinging when the foot is down and i'm trying to get a wriggle on. I've never given the zook this much of a run on the highway, but 1200K's from home I need to sort it out on the side of the road if possible.
I got new spark plugs in, new oil - leads, rotor thing and the dizzy cap aren't exactly old. I did run BP LPG for the first time and reckon that might have been a factor, but not the complete issue behind the pinging
What else should I check/consider? Gotta sort out ASAP, still got 5000K's to go on my mission

what oil?
the gas might be more butane than what you normally get, knock your timing off a bit
though for gas to ping there is something wrong, its a lot higher octane that petrol

yeah LPG is about 104 octane i believe .
check your base timing , and ignition advance (not sure on car or engine , but if any mechanical or vacuum advance)

If you cant get to a mechanic to check the timing, and adjust it, take off your vacume advance, this will the dizzy from advancing so far, there will be some from the spin, but not as much.
Pinging will stuff your donk.

I think it's the BP crappy LPG - been told not to use it, as it's the lowest octane count and least clean of all the LPGs. Using good ol' Magnatec, nothing to boutique or la tee da.
Maybe the dizzy cap - looking at it ten minutes ago it's got a bit of white powder build up.... too new for that though, only 6 months old at most

bp lpg blew the guts out of my gas converter in my old triton - to it to a gas mob to chuck in a new one
The first thing they said was did you use BP gas... yep
Well thats ya problem!

Pinging will stuff your donk.
Vacuum advance *advances with increased manifold vacuum* hence less foot down, more vacuum, more advance. He is having an issue with pinging when he puts the foot down.
Best bet to sort it out on the road is like others have said and knock back you base timing until it stops pinging. That will get you up and running safely. Then get some descent LPG and reset your base timing when you get around to it.
Engine running cool?

no
If it did you would have full advance at idle and decel and progressively less at higher load
vac advance has a special port that reads jsut above the throttle plate, at idle it sees no vacuum, as the throttle is open partly the port then is on the manifold side of the throttle so see vacuum to advance (generally light load, cruise situations where you are using not much throttle) then as the throttle is opened there is less vacuum at the port so advances less

Yea my bad shoulda also said uses a ported vacuum source, increases total overall timing between light and medium engine loads. Diminishes completely at idle and at WOT, therefore back to base+mechanical advance timing.
Anyway what I was trying to say was the OP says he has pinging issues when he puts the foot down therefore assuming heavy engine loads also probs WOT, meaning vac advance wouldn't be playing a part in the pinging issue.

If it is pinging, I assumed that it was advanced too far. WOT is max vacuum, and so, max advance. Removing that which advances the dizzy, means less advance at heavy loads/WOT and so, no pinging.
A bandaid only, but stops pinging till it can be fixed properly.

pinging is caused be more than ignition advance, burning oil seems popular with G engines
when accelerating can be lean accel pump too, dunno how you adjust that with gas
mechanical advance makes the advance, bit of work to limit though

Tell me about oil burn. I got a vit not long ago, changed the oil soon as I got it, nice mobil 1, prob only done 1500k max, probably not even, as have been away most of the time, and she lives in the shed. Got home, looked under the bonnet, water a tad low, thats cool, checked the oil, just touching the stick ??
Took a liter, but she does not blow smoke, well, except upon start up after a while stood down.
Royce, by removing the vacuum advance, this would eliminate one of the variables, surely?

crikey, I thought there were women on this forum.
Its at cruise he is having the problem, my concern is te damage that could be had by running like this, its bad if your donk pings at the occasional bog down WOT play times, but at normal driving, turn the car off, or at least do something or have a stuffed donk.
Was why I suggested removing the vac line, not under any means a fix, but may help till a mechanic can be found down the road.

perhaps your running lean, check for clean fuel filters, pump flow. even dirty carbys since you've changed types of fuel by the sound of it. odds are you have just filled up with a bad batch of fuel and should probaly dump it and refil rather than keep driving on it. Out of curiosity what is your base timing?

For as guess the guys who did the head resurface, gasket, cam belt and tappets would have set it at 8 degrees btdc. I would check it myself, but my timing light is piss poor at throwing out a descent light. I can hardly see it. Have used 95 Ron for years now. Fuel filter should be ok, but I'll still check it out. As I said before, I'm just baffled why it only does it at highway speeds at load and not down low (take off)

Did you mean pinking? Or are you a yank? Haha
Now on a serious note, it is usually caused from advanced timing, poor fuel or engine running very hot. Most probably the timing.

Do you have a snorkel?
If it was a bit hot (air temp that is) that might of been enough to just tip it over the edge
Has it got good oi in it? thats always my go to for G series engines pinging, due to it burning a bit of oil

Coles or Woolies petrol last fill? Maybe passing off lower octane fuel as 95 RON

I think Shell is with Woolworths.
Don't they do random checks on pumps now to make sure that they're providing the correct quality fuel as displayed?
