you will need to run a rear diff in th front, as the cro-mo's are 26 spline..

cv's are cheap and easy to change, if you strengthen them, your more likely to bust something more expensive, like a diff, or gearbox or tranny

Just my 2c worth!

That may well be true for other vehicles, but when a Sierra breaks a cv joint it usually (read all the time) takes out the axle splines also. Not only do you have to get a cv but have to source a replacment axle too.

The upgraded cv's, if they break, tend to leave the axle splines intact.

hey if u buy what is listed u have to Options u can run a rear locker in the front eg auto / air .. this will replace the spidergears..if u do not want to buy a locker for the front .. u need to buy replacement spider gears u need 2 x ...this is because the new axles are 26spline .. and the old are 22 .. hope that helps lowrange sells all the parts u will need :)

http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.ph ... 83000.html

... also i do suggest u do wheel bearings and swivel hubs if they have not be done in a while

Ok so let me get this straight, If I use the aftermarket spidergears 26 spline does that mean I have to use a rear locker up front or I cant lock the front at all ?

Well. seeing i am yet to bust either a cv or an axle, i didn't know this, guess its lucky i have a couple of spare n/t cv's and matching axles :D
Dave

edit, but what your saying, if i upgrade the cv's and somehow manage to bust them and not something else, then i will just have to replace the cv, not the cv and axle?

Yep, as a minimum, you need the axles and side gears.
Just be aware though, replacing the side gears requires disassembly of the diff centre.

When I installed mine, I also replaced all front end seals and bearings, including king-pins, knuckles etc...
I had a rear air-locker fitted to my front housing so it all just slotted back in.
If you can afford a locker for the front, now is the time to do it

probably be cheaper to source a rear diff carrier out of a sierra as it already has the 26 spline side gears.

EDIT: especially at that price!

If he's any good, then yes he would have...
Especially since it is very easy to damage the smaller inner seal when removing the axles.

If you've recently had the front bearings replaced, then that's fine. Mine hadn't been done in a while, so I thought I'd do them while the front end was all apart. I got the knuckle rebuilt kit from Lowrange and replaced everything in that. Inner and outer axle seals, bearings, kingpin bearings, knuckle felts and rubbers.
It wasn't totally necessary, but a good idea while everything was apart anyway.

As LittleJeep said, just find a rear center and use the side gears out of that.. No point spending $120 on side gears plus postage. Lowrange do knuckel seal kits for $45 a side, be worth doing that at the same time.

yes u need to use a rear locker up front ... i have just F***ed my Crown and pinion on my Current diff so i have sourced a front dif for mine ... what i am going to do is buy the Cromoly axles and lockright locker with replacement spider gears Total cost Including Postage is 670 ... basicly what im suggesting .is if u are going to all this effort to replace a axle and Make it HD... u should put a locker in the front ... in a ideal world u would put a rear air locker .. but you could just do what im doing .. hope that makes sence and helps out :)

On a Sierra, broke cv can jam steering suddenly, not so safe at speed.
I would drive slowly out of trouble to a safe spot to remove it, before highway home.

when removing broken cv, be very careful,
as broken bits hidden in the grease can be extremely sharp......
also busted bits can hide in the grease,
I found a chunk of cv embedded in my king pin bearing when I last rebuilt me knuckles.

if the hubs are unlocked and it is in 2wd and it isn't binding the steering it will be fine! this is because the axle shafts are not turning.

i've been in a hilux after smashing a CV, with the same train of thought, steering still locked up, we still ran off the road (nothing hit, no one injured).

A smaller broken peice had worked its way down in general driving and bound up/wedged its self in with the biggest part of CV and locked everything up.

I would remove the CV if circumstances allow.

I'd have thought you would get further with twin lockers and what you're on, than spoa running 32's unlocked?

Maybe I'm wrong, it depends what you're driving...
