I have just laid down quite a few $$ for all the parts to overhaul the front hubs and king pins on my Jim. Its getting the wobbles big time. I can see the slop in the king pins when I force the wheel by hand, particularly on the drivers side

From various ebay sellers i have bought

Ben-T bearing nut removal tool
Front wheel Bearings
King pin bearing kit
New king pins
Swivel hub seal kit

(unrelated;also a timing belt kit and new water pump)

Its all in the mail I have been told.

I have downloaded the "how to" articles from the Big Jimny website and they seem reasonably intelligible. I also have the official workshop manual so I should be able to grope my way through the process. Might even do a laymans howto tech article if i have the time and not get too frustrated. (FM! the rear wheel bearings were a biiatch!)

some questions;

Are there any other things I should be looking for when I do this work? Also what kinds of grease should I be using to repack bearings etc?

Thanks

the only thing I can think of would be
1 - brake pads... while your in there may be worth doing
2 - changing diff fluid.

I use HTB (high temp bearing) grease.. never had a problem using that.

I am hoping with the new king pins and king pin bearings that they will tighten up enough to stop the wobble. It says that the shimming process is trial and error anyway so the only way to find out if you should shim it or have the correct number of shims in there is if you put it back together each time and drive the car. It seems the wobble is mainly brought about by poor design in mass distribution of the steering components.
The tighter king pins have a dampening effect to prevent that. If dampening is all it takes to stop any future wobble then a steering dampener is probably the most effective and long lasting solution.

Brakes I will check out as they come off. I replaced the discs and pads less than 2 years ago so they should still be ok.
Strangley, when I did replace the discs the brake shudder came back within a couple of weeks. I am thinking now that might be related to a combination of worn wheel bearings and the sloppy king pins. Does that sound like a fair assumption?
Time will tell...

Does anyone know what type of socket is used for the bolts holding on the air locking hub cover?

In the Big Jimny how-to it says to use an E10 torx socket and it has a picture showing the 6 spline torx head of the bolt.

http://www.bigjimny.com/images/documents/Changing_the_Front_Wheel_Bearings.pdf

However, the bolts on my car have 12 points (so its not a torx bolt) and it measures around about 9mm from one spline point to the the opposite point.

See attached picture

I think it's a 10mm double hex socket, could be 8mm

Thanks stekky, I will check tomorrow.
I have some double hex sockets but they are 1/2" drive so they might not fit between the cover and the head. I should be able to borrow one if that is the case.

I am not at my workshop and I have just had a hunt through the garden shed/redbacks and cant find any 12 point sockets or spanners.

I know you are busting to know, stek but youll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out

unless someone can run out with an 8-9-10mm 12point ring spanner and test it for me....

they are not double hex, the are t10 torx sockets. u will need a proper torx socket to get them off unless you dodgy something to get them off.

front bearings are pretty easy i did them a couple of weekends ago.

I am not doubting that some jimnys have torx bolts as is evidenced in the bigjimny how-to.

Torx come in two styles, internal (T8, T10, T12 etc) and external (E8, E10 etc)

Mine, as it turns out, are double hex... see the attached photo

all credit to the steak knife

FWIW my Jimny is a '98 build

i used a t10 socket to get mine off. never tried the double hex sockets, if i knew where the bolts were i would check and see.

Do your self a favor, get 4 of these, when your doing you rebuild, put 1 on each upper king pin..

I don't care if your jim doesn't wobble now, the fact of the matter is, it will, by adding load to the king pin you are greatly reducing the chance's of the dreaded Jimny wobble's happening to your car.. :D

cheers stekky, the new king pins i ordered come with new shims? did the jimny's not have shims between the king pins and hub from factory?

also im freaking out about this nut removal tool for the jimny hubs. Just read the thing on ebay for it, about the nuts torque settings and special design, so $64 too use once prolly, Thats going to suck. Will see if I can work around this with my fabricating old mate over the road unless someone can lend me one for the day:D:D:D:D:D

The shim's go under the king pin, on to the king pin bearing, increasing drag, the sierra one's de-crease drag..

No the kit won't have them, either a bearing shop or genuine..

the reason I say 1 per top is, if the hub doesn't have enough drag ( 4.6kg measured with fish scale's), the lower one's are easier to get out than the top one's, once the caliper's on that is..

I think that is good advice.

The king pins i got have 2 shims each that lie under the plate. They are rectangular and have four holes to line up with the king pin plate bolts.

That means they should do the opposite to the washer type shims that go on the spindle end and push on the bearing. If I remove one of these shims from under the plate would that have the same effect as placing a washer shim on the spindle end?

yes, but I doubt they would be .5mm, but it's a good start..

Each shim stack (2 shims per king pin) is somewhere between 0.5 and 0.75mm (measured with a steel rule) so thats ~1.5mm of shims per side.

Ill try and get a better measurement with the verniers tomorrow.

Edit: each shim is 0.4mm, 2 per pin

:?

I would call them kin pins

but I'm not a mechanic. I'll give mechanicing a go though when ever possible =]

oh and also. for other jimny owners with the star pointer shaped bolts on the auto hubs a 8mm ring spanner fits but be careful as it's not a perfect fit. more of a get out of the shit fix. eg. unlocking hubs manually if the vac hubs loose there vacness. sorry this doesn't help you in particular...

The official Jimny workshop manual calls them king pins. Some people call the whole system a swivel hub or swivel joint.

The nut only has 4 small holes in it to grip. So unless you can come up with another brilliant idea on how to undo it then you need the special tool. You also need a torque wrench than can tighten it back up to 220Nm (not to be confused with the "torx" conversation above)

These how-to .pdf's on the Big Jimny website are definitely worth reading before you try and do anything and should answer alot of your questions.
