Just a question out of interest for those of you with transfer reduction gears. With the 6.5 or even the 4.16, in low range what kind of speed can you do. I am aware that 6.5 are something like a 260% reduction in low and 4.16 are like 80% reduction in low but how does this equate in real life to actual vehicle low range speed. (obviously tyre size comes into play) I am not after a calculation of what speed it should or should not be able to do, I am after info from people who ACTUALLY have these gears in their cars and know for a FACT what speeds they do. My reason for asking this is that I know of people that are contemplating going for 6.5's but use their vehicles for general purpose, i.e commuting, basic bush and some beach. They read 6.5 this and 6.5 that and they think they need to have this wonder transformation. I may be wrong because I have not had them but the way I see it is that although 6.5's are awesome for crawling they would effectively make your vehicle into a high range only vehicle on the beach or anywhere else. Can anyone shed some light ?? |

This will not help probs but will give you a fair idea Not my car but friend has 6.5s, 35 muddies and a 1.3l and he tops out about 20km/h in 5th low |

with very heavy 31" tyres i can go faster then is safe, 120kph easy. lowrange 5th is around 20-25kph. i reckon that 6.5s give ya 10 usable forward gears as 5th low is a little lower then 1st high. i have easy done 75000km with these gears and besides braking a stock mount on average once a year have had no issues. |

With my 4.16 t-case gears and 29's I can do about 40-50kph in 4th. For the mainly mud and slippery tracks that I drive they are perfect. I very rarely drive rock (only once) so I don't need the super low gears. Before the 1.6 conversion I pretty much only used low range, or 2WD. The old engine struggled to push all 4 wheels at once. The extra torque I have now lets me use H4 a lot more |

also they are 190% lower in low range and 20% lower in high so ya dont need low range as much. |

I run a 4:1 case with 4:30 diffs on 33x12.50's. I am at about 3500-3700 RPM at 65Mph. For me that is perfect gearing with a low range, low enough in 1st gear to crawl but not so low I am going slow in the other gears. I recently acquired a 5:XX case. I will see how the 5:xx go with stock gearing now instead of 4:30's and report back. I think it will be a tad lower in low range, but the3:73's should keep the engine happy at 65MPH |

You only have 2 speeds in reverse (high and low range). High becomes clutch burning country and low gives minimal wheel speed. I run 4.9's with WT diff gears on 30's. I can still do about 40-50kph in low between rough sections of track. Low first could be slightly lower for actual high traction rock crawling surfaces but overall I think its a great package for my DD and weekender. Dan |

A few of the gluggly clay tracks at home Ive needed some reverse wheel speed to clear to treads and get the momentum to reverse outta the hole to try again. |

6.5's totally changed the way i drove, and the car. 1st low was too low for some rocks, like step ups. Sometimes you need momentum as its too slow. But this also calculates to tyres and other setups. Decending, i used 1st low whenever i could. Means not using the brake as often as most 4wds. On freeway, reved abit high for my liking. on 33's, actual size 32'sx12.5 Yes all highrange on beach, 6.5's and 1.6efi lets you use 2wdH if you want to have fun. Power to play. I drive rock and dirt. No mud if possible. |

4.16s and 29s. Top speed in high seems to be somewhere in the 125-130 range. Low is about 45. Even with the 4.16s sand performance has deteriorated. Some of that I think will be the bighorns too, not so great on the sand as the old tyres... |

My ute with 29" AT's, 4.6 diffs and 1.0L transfer (same highrange as 4.16's) revved a little too high (4400@100) but topped out around 145-155 in 5th. Thats with a G16B. Went great in the sand on the AT's, shit on muds. The high revs had it digging holes all the time. |

6:5's are a bit to low with my standard 4.1 diffs for on road i was doing 4000rpm at 95km/phr with 31's, offroad though on rocks the lower the better, in sand high range suffices and low 5th climbs any dune with little to no run up needed. |

Ok so are they 190% thats 2x lower than he old 4.16's, yeah for some reason i thought they were 260%. |

i think 6.5s are to low for most people that are running 1.3 engines .. yes if you have the 1.6 the 6.5s are awsome u should be able to use high range 4wd on the beach .. but with out the 1.6 .. i find u are limited to what u can do .. like yer sure u can go on the beach .. but theres really no gear for it unless ur rev.. its Tits off .. btw im running 31s atm |

Can anyone shed some light ?? I have WT on MT 30's with 4.16's and a G16b and it is great, I use 2-5th low on the sand hills on straddie and it is perfect. I have been on the beach with a sierra on 32's with 6.5s and it was crap, too much torque in low and kept on bogging down in the soft stuff & in the soft sand the 1.3 couldn't pull high. We spent all weekend digging it out, you can't slowly crawl sandhills... will admit on the weekend that I had the vit ( g16b and 235 AT's) and the sierra over there, the vit did go better up the dunes ( running in low range), with stock gearing. |

This may be a stupid question... but is there such thing as a transfercase flush? i've bought a TC with 6.1 ratios in there and just wanting to do some maintenance stuff to it before i put them on the zook. Sorry to crash the thread |

Not really. Just put new oil in it. If the existing oil is mirky/milky, change it, then change it again in 100k's. Should clean it out. |

I just got 6.5's and I'm running 29's and the way I see it is this. L1 is for crawling. L2 is for a little bit of momentum, and then back to nearly crawling speed or tough climbs. L3 is good for general to tough climbing and driving at low speeds e.t.c. L4 is good for general climbing and driving at a higher speed but it's still slow. L5 is good for general climbing and driving at speeds just below what you would use H1 for. H1 is good when you get onto more open tracks because you can then move up through the gears as normal driving. Basically I use low range gears for obstacles I want to go slow on, and then change ratios back to high range for travelling along flat tracks e.t.c when I want to cover ground. Haven't had a go at sand yet though! EDIT: Stock gears you will be in L1 for anything I've just said was lowrange with 6.5's. I haven't calculated it properly but either my (WT Leafy) 6.5's L5 or H1 is very close to Anto86's (coily) stock L1. |

what about 5.14.1 im trying to work out what gears to get at the moment i have 31s with nt diff gears and a g16b i had 6.5.1 gears but found them way to low. as jr zook said you get stuck in mud and your reverse is to slow but you have 3rd in forward |

5.14's are a nice happy medium. They a have a very low crawl/off road ratio, but don't affect the top end as much as the 6:xx's do. another alternative is to go with a 4:1 and then fine tune the gearing with diff gears (if you need them). This is what I did, and it was perfect for the 1.3 and later the 1.6. with 4:1's and 4:30's I ran around 3000Rpm at 95 Kph I got a killer deal on a 5:14 case with twin sticks, so I sold my case and picked that up. Now I am going to probably remove the 4:30s as I think it will be too low on the freeway. |

5.14's would be ideal with the 31's an NT centres I reckon!!! Either that or 4.9's like me and stekky are running on 30-31's. |

I think another reason why so many people choose the 6.5 gears over 5.14 or 4.9 is the price From LowRange the 6.5s are $500, 5.14s are $630 and 4.9s were $575 (now on special for $525) |

Twin sticks allow you 2 wheel drive low. So you can use your transfer case's low range and not have to use 4wd. Twin sticks work nice for lockers, because you can shift to 2wd low for turns, and then right back into 4wd afterwards. I do so well in 2wd low sometimes I forget to go back to 4wd, but I am harshly reminded when I try to climb a hill and the front tires are not turning..whoops. |
