so i am getting a pretty loud noise from what i think is my gear box , i have had a bit of a look but don't want to spend $$ on a new box if it isn't the problem.one of the main things that makes me think that it is the gear box is i can turn the jack shaft from side to side about 20mm in each direction the transfer and rear shaft turn at the same time so thinking there is free play in the gear box. also if put the transfer in neutral and run it in gear the noise is still there, a very metalic noise in 1st,2nd 3rd but then sounds like a couple of rocks rolling around in a cement mixer in 4th & 5th.

Could it be the uni joints on the jackshaft?

What does it sound like with your gearbox in neutral?

There was a thread here recently with similar symptoms and it was a frozen uni joint on the jackshaft!
