Hey guys,

I've been looking into getting rid of my shorty and I've found a nice clean 2l v6 lwb vitara. I just want to know if their is any common fualts or problems that occur or what I should be looking for when I look at it. It's a 1997 model I believe.

Cheers, Alex

this one survived the Elcho locals for 2.5 years. i have seen them kill new ford territory's in 3 weeks.
they must be as tough as fuck
5 min with a welder would get it going again.

Hahaha. Think the guy mentioned it had noisy tappets at a low/cold idle. Only thing he mentioned I think

That more than likely timing chain rattle a good service history is a must but they are a tuff car and engine will last if looked after

yeah, it will be noisy timing chain, they are bloody shockin. Mine sounds like a chain being dragged over your face, it even has "timing chain noise" written on the manifold from the wreckers, so when a wrecker notices a noise then you know there's a noise!

as far as i know that seems to be acceptable and you just drive it.

Steve's got it, there is a modified tensioner available, but depending on K's youd be better off with a 2.5 or 2.7 & bolt that in..
timing cover's leak & the front diff's are weak as piss...

I'd be better off putting a 2.5 or 2.7 engine or chain in??

I know the front diffs aren't that strong, but well...ive never had diff problems in my shorty and I'm running 32s on the rocks.

Hmmm, wouldn't it just be easier/cheaper to Replace the timing belt?? Haha

Are the 2l's much ballsy-we then the g16b's??

go the whole engine and gearbox,

mine is a 2LV6, it looks like a 1.6 gearbox though. Hasn't broken yet and we cane the crap out of it.

The gearbox looks like a 1.6 box and has a bell housing adaptor that matches the V6. I think the factory had all these 1.6 gearboxes leftover so matched them up to the V6's.

When i went to get a new clutch, there was some issues, we got the V6 clutch but it didn't fit, so we got a 1.6 clutch and that fitted.
