On eBay there is 3000lb (1300ish kg) winches.
Am I a complete idiot in thinking this will be good enough for a emergency thing only to pull my sierra out, not for recovering others?

At $100 delivered for one of them it seems too good to be true..

Surely using it diverting back to the recovery point making it double the pulling capacity, would work enough to get me out if I'm alone?

Don't hate on me too much lol

Probably a little too small mate. If you can imagine being on a steep hill, with rocks or logs etc infront of you, and for whatever reason; no drive...... Just imagine the momuntary load placed on the winch when dragging a 2200lb sierra up hill and over a rock half the size of the tyre.

Its going to be way more than a 3000lb winch can handle.

Winches can be VERY dangerous if not used properly or overloaded, so probably best not to buy one thats too small for the job.

Thanks mate. Will keep looking for a cheapish set up. I want to get one before I make my front bar, cos Im not fond of doing things twice..

So minimum of double? Or about 8000lb minimum?
There's a 8000lb on eBay for probably $350 landed..

For a sierra i wouldn't go any lower than 6000lb. Any more than 8000lb is probably overkill unless you intend to comp it.

was some good info in this thread i think.

i'll be buying one of these for the princess, with some winch rope & a snatch block it would be more than enough for a zook + being light weight

I picked up my 9500LB at the local flea market with rollers and hand controller for $300

check out the sales section, Boostcruising or trading post they come up every so often. Bigger is better when it comes to winches.. nothing worse then that gut feeling wondering if somethings about to snap..

Stay away from permanent magnet motors. Series wound motors are better suited and can take more abuse. We always like to talk about looking after our winches but in the heat of the moment we often run them longer than their intended duty cycle and push for that single line pull when we really should be using a snatch and double line.

I've seen a few 3000-6000lb winches with PLASTIC gearsets. stay away from that stuff!!
