Post subject:  Narrow Track Owners Sign In here...

Thread title says it all really...

SJ models only!
(sorry LJ owners but you have PLENTY of threads already!)

So be it a LWB or a SWB, Soft top or Hard top, 1.0, 1.3, 1.6 converted, The idea here is for those of us running 'original' NT diffs, be they locked or open, its all about the track width...

opening post should include a quick vehicle description and a picture of your NT., your location(state), and just generally why you've chosen/went NT. over the WT/coiler alternative.

If you have questions, suggestions for mods ie: tire rim setups diff ratio swaps, locker advice, random things you have encountered when mixing parts from WT-NT that may/may not work etc feel free to post them.

For those new members who are unsure if their vehicle is a NT or a WT
the following description and images are an EASY and QUICK way to identify.

From either the front or the back of the vehicle, locate your leaf springs. follow them to where they attach to the chassis, this is where your shackle is, from here the shackle is then located to its spring hanger,

NT based vehicles have the spring hanger attached inline with the chassis
(see picture A)
.

WT based vehicles have the spring hanger attached outward of the chassis aprox. 1.5 inches.
(See Picture B)

Another visual determination, while not always fool proof is the type of wheel arch flare attached.

NT vehicles generally have a smaller black plastic flare, but may be removed if vehicle has been fitted with larger rims and tires.
(See Picture C)

WT vehicles have a wider plastic or metal molded flare that is colour coded to the car. these are more common than NT's.
(See Picture D)

OBVIOUSLY NEITHER OF THESE ARE 100% FOOL PROOF,THEY ARE ALSO NOT THE ONLY DIFFERENCES, TRACK WIDTH WISE THIS IS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE!! AS WT DIFFS MAY BE SPACED AT NT SPACING. THIS IS MORE COMMONLY FOUND ON A HIGHLY MODIFIED VEHICLE AND HENCE NOT LISTED AS AN EXAMPLE.
If you are unsure if your NT is 'Standard' post up a picture showing the diff/spring location and wheel offset in comparison to the side of the vehicle. (search BOGFROG for a fine example of NT spacing on WT diffs)

B:Spring hanger offset to the OUTSIDE of chassis rail

D:Larger WT flare

Victoria
85 Holden Drover.
1.3,5spd,1.0,Open x2, Factory R+P,31"s

I picked up my NT by chance.I was in the market for a 4wd, and the Drover popped up. Inspected, test driven, cash handed over. I love the fact it wont sit in the standard wheel ruts when on the tracks, and dont really notice any unrealistic stability issues on the road. It is Daily Driven, weekend Warriored and all round abused and loved.
1.3(1298) 5spd, 1.0 transfer, into Open Diffs, with factory internals inside, a useable lowrange and 5th gear JUST gets a workout...

I saw my 87 tin top as i was cruising ebay it was a bit broken but cheap.
so i joined here and found out how easy it was to fix.
i have no stability problems on road. d/d does
off road i have more choice of lines and can dodge wheel ruts some times.
bloody great car the more i own it the more i don't want to part with it.

When you say fitting WT diffs to a NT is the go do you mean just the centers of the whole diff?

Whole diff, wheel to wheel.

Idea being that you have a wider track than standard NT (same track as WT) but you have spring perches closer together than WT so you get more flex as there's more leverage to act on the spring.

I think...

Post subject:  Re: Narrow Track Owners Sign In here...

Get a wt diff and cut of the perches and weld on new perches inline with nt spacing
Adds about 40 to 50mm on both sides
Hence a wider track nd more leverage like teracis said
