Can anyone tell me how to bleed the rear brakes on my GV?
I thought this was going to be a simple job, but I just cannot get the fluid to flow. Keep in mind, I have never done it before.
What am I doing wrong?

im no pro but this is what i do.

start with the brake furthest away from the master cylinder.
get someone to pump the pedal until it is hard.
crack the bleed niple, not too much, just enough to get a slow flow of luid. and get the person to push down on the pedal until it hits the floor.
close the niple and pump again.
crack the niple and push the pedal to the floor.

make sure you check the resovoir regularly and add fluid when needed.
once that brake is done move to the next one closest to the master cylinder.

note: do not take your foot off the pedal with the niple open.

Even better option, go to supercheap and get a 1 man brake bleeding kit.
It's a piece of clear hose sized to fit over a brake nipple, with a 1 way valve on the end.

Fit over nipple.
Place container below hose to catch spilt fluid.
Check brake reservoir is full.
Crack brake nipple.
Pump brake pedal until no more bubbles appear in clear hose (constant flow of fluid).
Close nipple.
Refill reservoir.
Move to next wheel and repeat.

I do mine in order of: Rear Left, Rear Right, Front Left, Front Right.

I do it like this

Start at wheel furthest from master cylinder
Pump up pedal until hard
Open nipple and pump the pedal until you can't see any more air
Close nipple while holding pedal down
Pump pedal until hard
Open nipple while holding pedal down and check for more air
Close nipple and move on to next wheel

Stekky want to do mine?

I have tried all of the above but still no flow.
I have also changed the wheel cylinders, so does this make any difference?

Nipple.

Not GV, but on a normal Vit, the rear brakes have just the one bleed nipple on the drivers side rear.

Yes the 1 man kit is handy, but I just pour some brake fluid into a bottle and a hose into the bottom of the bottle, bubbles blow out and it will only suck up fresh fluid, sure it's a bit of wasted fluid but it seems to work.

The other 2 person way is to crack the bleeder and close it as the fluid is squirting out, Tell who ever is on the pedal to let go ONLY when you have closed the bleeder, repete process until the fluid streams out and not splutters out.

Just keep at it, I once went through 2 bottles to do all brakes.

Post subject:  Re: Skool me on Brake Bleeding.

not sure if its a bad idea or not but i bought 2 bottles when doing mine and pumped the first bottle through and re-captured whatever came out. Then i re-used this fluid until all the air was bled through. Once this was done i opened the second fresh bottle and bled it through until the system was full of fresh fluid.

Might save you having to waste new fluid by flushing it through in order to remove air.

if its not working.. pump the brake pedal til she goes hard...unscrew the solid/flex line at the wheel cylinders to ensure the fluid is making its all the way.. on a rare occasion FOB gets in the brake lines

Thanks guys. I'll give all this a go tomorrow. I've been pumping the pedel for half an hour and the main fluit tank has only dropped by 5mm.
I may have just needed to pump a heap of fluid through in the first place.
See how I go tomorrow.

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet - I believe there's a bleed nipple on the LSPV, and that will also need to be bled.

If you can't get fluid flowing in the rear brake circuit, chances are the LSPV has closed them off - especially if you have the weight off of the rear wheels - put it on axle stands with the axles stands under the rear axle.

Please note - if you have ABS - you can ignore the above, there will not an LSPV.

No ABS, But what is the LSPV?
I do have it on stands on the chassie rails, so I'll move them to the axles and see if it makes any difference.

Load proportioning valve

Where is that generally located?

Author:  fordem [ Thu May 05, 2011 12:28 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Skool me on Brake Bleeding.

LSPV is the load sensing proportioning valve - the more load in the back of the vehicle the more rear braking effort you can have without the wheels locking up - the LSPV is attached to the right rear chassis rail and connects to the axle with a spring - it guesstimates the load by how close the axle is to the rail, so if you have the vehicle supported by the frame and the axle hanging, it will sense it as no load or a very light load.

Thanks Fordem, I'll check it out tonight.
I have seen it under there but didn't know what it did, but I dont recall there being a bleed nipple on it, but I wasn't looking for one there either.
This GV only has one bleed nipple on the rear passenger side.

The manual says there is - I haven't checked personally.

Should be one....

Take the spring/leaver off it & try again...

I run a length of aquarium air line from the bleed nipple all the way back to the master cylinder and pump away till no air comes out then move to next bleeder and repeat..
Always start from furthest away and repeat the whole lot if necessary.

I quite often don't have anyone around to help so I devised this way of doing it by myself and it works very well.

Ever looked at the color of the brake fluid coming out of the bleed nipples? I don't want that filth back in my brake system.

If you have to bleed on your own get yourself a vacuum bleeder kit - a hand held vacuum pump along with a capture container and you can suck the fluid through from the wheel end with no one to pump the pedal.

Yes I have.... I described what I do to bleed air out... Fluid flush is different.
When I bleed a system I have already drained all the fluid out. Only fluid in the system is new stuff.
Brake fluid should never be filthy if you service your vehicle appropriately... IE Brake fluid change every 2 years or 40,000km.

have you checked that the nipple isnt full of mud? pull it all the way out and see if the fluid run,s out when its removed. if it does then clean it with parts cleaner and or compressed air. otheraise follow the lines and see if there is anothe bleed nipple near the lpv.

SO....when I first started this bake bleed, I though if shouldn't be too hard.
Although I had never done it before, I had seen it done 1000 times, so I thought I was doing everything right, but things just weren't working.
After much frustration, I finally figured it out, the problem was my bloody wife sitting in the front seat!!!!
Every time I said push the pedal to the floor, she was pushing the fucking clutch       ,
Any how it was good to learn about the LSPV which I didn't know, and now the job is all done. :woohoo:

Speed bleeders. Crack 'em, pump away, close 'em.

I've flushed my GV brake fluid a few times over the years. Never bled the LSPV though and the fluid colour has always changed from black'ish to green (DOT 3) at the rear passenger side so I assumed all of the fluid has been flushed in that line.

I would recommend you bleed each nipple!
I did last night and started at the rear left, then did the LSPV, then the front left and front right last and got old brown fluid at each point. The LSPV was the worst one.
I ended up using 2 bottles of fluid and the brakes are still spongeie, so I might do it again in a week or two after some use.

I meant I bled all 3 brake nipples, just not the LSPV nipple. When I finished there was no air bubbles and all the fluid was new.

The brake pedal feel is fine.
