Post subject:  How To Use Dwell Meter?

A friend gave me a dwell meter/tacho.
How do I use this?
What will it tell me?
Is it useful for tuning?

Yep, dwell for setting points gap. Royce should be able to give you the run down, been a while since I've played with points

2 alligator clips, one coil pos, one coil neg, if that doesnt work swap em, if that doesnt work try coil neg and earth or something, I cant remember :)

dwell is the angle of engine rotation the points are closed / module is switched on, you cant adjust it on a sierra but have a look anyway :)

I've got a couple of dwell meters and timing lights in the shed. faarking useless now. It was good to be able to adjust things. you could adjust the points very accurately with out using feeler gauges

from memory most 4 cylinder vehicles with points ignition ran best at around 50 degrees. Most 6 cylinder cars with points was around 32 degrees. Can't remember v8's. one wire to coil neg and the other wire to earth. I hav'nt used one in years. Not even gas powered forklifts have had points in them for the last 20 years or so
