Hi, I have been looking into the start of our line of Suzuki 4X4's and find the first was the ON360 built by Hope Star - Has anyone seen one - here or over seas?

It can be seen here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKOWZaBljKA about half way through.

To my knowledge, suzuki bought the rights to the Hopestar ON360 and developed The LJ10 off that.

If you do a search on the LJ10 forum there was a thread about them that said how many where left in the world, the was only a few, can't remember the actual number though.

I love that look - it was all hand made and that is why the panels are all flat.

The size seems close to a LJ so I am thinking of getting a a stuffed one and building a body my self - I can NEVER own a real ON360 so why not a repli-car  Back in the 1980 a mate in Qld. got a kit (Fibre-glass) that fitted on a Suzuki chassis and looked like a Jeep - Fooled a lot of people.

But you could own an ex-US Marines M422 Mighty Mite, which is what the ON360 was loosely based around. The one pictured below was on US E-bay for US$3500. Built in the early 60's, it had a Wisconsin aircooled engine, 4 wh independant suspension, 4 spd and hi/lo trans and was designed to be air portable and float!

No doubt it was seen in Japan as part of the US Military presence there and fitted in well with the dimensions required for Japanese domestic vehicles (later becoming the "Kei" car rules).

Japan in the 60's was much like China is today, with "Research and development" sometimes being outright copying of existing designs. Toyota's early Landcruiser used a metric copy of a Chev 6 engine, Mitsubishi copied the CJ3 Jeep to make the J53. Hopestar just got their start by copying a smaller design 4wd and using Japanese mechanicals.
