is it easier to take the engine out to change a clutch in a sierra? 1.3l

Takes 45 to pull a box.. 90 to pull a carby engine... Box is defiantly the way to go.

depends who is doing it, if your a wizz at pulling the engine out then thats prob the quickest way, or if u got the room to pull the box out do it that way,
i know for me its alot quicker to pull the box out,

If you don't have the luxury of a hoist and you don't want to mess around crawling under a car pull the engine out too.
When the motor is out it will be much easier to do the rear main. Whilst it's out perfect opertunity to do anything else that needs doing.

a gear box does not come out without fouling something, we just spent 3.5 hours trying to get the box out.

i dont have the luxury of body lift so that doesnt help

IMO its quicker and easier to pull the engine and gearbox out in 1 unit,
i have the luxury of a hoist and a workshop

my dad was a mechanic for 30 years and he cant believe that it has taken 3.5 hours to try and get it out, theres no way u can do it without fouling the pressure plate on the bell housing, we removed everything to make it easier and jacked the engine up and pulled it forward.

WTF 3.5hrs with experience that's uber long!! All I ever do is loosen the engine mounts, take the dizzy out and support the sump with a stand/jack. This lowers the rear of the engine making it easier to get the box in/out. Watch your fan/shroud clearance also when you do this.

I roll it on it side at it comes out with out undoing the engine mounts. Remove the front driveshaft as my cat is in the way, and completely remove the reart mount from the car..

Was it getting caught on the flat top of gearbox bell housing? If you rotate the gearbox about 45 degrees so that the rounded sides of the bell housing are at the top it should clear OK.

I'm with boostedbrick. Front drive shaft out. Gearbox mount removed and bit of a twist of the box and your tongue out the right way and it falls out.

i had a similar problem but i got it out easy just could not get it back in so un done the left engine mount twisted the engine enough to get the box sitting up in the tunnel then twisted it back to bolt the box back up.

Did both mine and my sisters on the ground at home and it was all done in about 2 hours from drive in to drive out. Not that hard at all just gotta twist it bit and bam out it comes onto your arm which was sposed to catch it

On a Vit I think id rather take the motor out, the manual boxs are bloody heavy.

here's a Tip and it makes it alot easyer for later on what u will find when u go to drop your box out is it will foul up on the cross member what u need to do to its get a angle grinder and trim the cross member i think its about 30 mill
to secs il get a photo up

what u need 2 do is trim that then u can move the box back enuf so it wont foul up on the pressure plate i had the same issue mate

this way u dont need to twist or anything just pull back and drop down vista virsa

I did mine several time on the driveway with jackstands. Found it was easier to slide the gearbox back away from the engine and rest the front of the box on a jackstand, then kinda squeeze in between them and remove the clutch assy. More room to manouver the box out. Especially with a couple of inches of suspension lift giving more room to move. Just watch when undoing the clutch assy, alloy bellhousings bite.
