Looking at the idea of installing a hand throttle to my zuk. Have no idea if it would be possible, but they can be very handy at times.

ideas/thoughts???

seen some good setups using mountain bike shift levers, done poorly they're a waste of time/dangerous.

Or a choke lever setup from a early model car (old diesels had them). You might even be able to get a new one from super cheap or something.

My pajero had one. Good I found it handy for rock sections and using air compressors. Not worth installing one though.

great if ur doing a 4x4 mish by urself. being able to crank the trottle on in low range when u get bogged then get out and push is great. though this can be done with cruize controll aswell. witch is probs a better/ more available option

try old MQ patrol for pull and twist style or old troopys for twist (more accurate)...good idea for crawling in rocky/bouncy terrain ....

also, pretty sure cruise control won't operate at the low speeds that would be useful for an off road situation.

 please don't post stupid shit as the next dumb fuck on the net will read it & try it.

funny coz u lot think im joking. probably wouldnt try it in a zuk but ive done it in a poootrol, though low range is alot lower in them (note is only realy sutible for use in beach 4wding)

edit: was the old twisty hand throttle. then again should also clarifie (after considering that most sierras on here are not diesel, do not try this with your car)

My Sierra had a hand throttle.
It was a 1.0 but with a 1.3 fitted.
I used its uneeded choke cable to,
connect to the idle up end of carby.
I removed the automatic idle up stuff.
Originally fitted mine for back problems,
helped legs on long trips, too.
But.
I found it invaluable on bouncy climbs,
where a foot could easily slip off,
or too far on the throttle.
And in bumpy river crossings.
Great for hill starts too.

However you achieve it, make sure it cant interfere with foot throttle,
cos you still need it sometimes.

clearly would not require the handle throttle if there were two of you

WTF, that HAS to be the dumbest thing I've read on here for a while...

picture this situation. your driving along in your early model lets say MQ short wheelbase turbo diesel pootroll.

this particular place that you are driving happens to be a beach with soft sand (not the car park of the hair sallon) you are again completing a trip that you have done hundreds of times before. probably about a 100km round trip its night time and your on your way home. lets say 10 oclock its a high tide supposed to peak at 12 and you are forced to drive in the soft sand near the small dunes.

as your traveling along the car begins to bog down hard and fast your only option is to drive into the water (the littel bit that the tide only just reaches) normaly this bit is harder than the rest of the beach. you drop back to lowrange and gradual begin to make your way along inch by inch you creep forwards but the hard sand is getting softer and softer. the water is begining to rush around ur tyres itself about an inch deep.

all of a sudden u find u have no way forwards and no way backwards. normaly your only options would be to get towed out, pushed or dig the sand away. theres no other people or cars around and every time u dig some sand out the water quickly washes it back in. you have to push. but no point in trying to push a bogged car in neutral is there especialy by yourself.

NOT SO STUPID NOW

Haha it'd be even funnier if the car gained traction while you were pushing it, drove 200 meters up the beach then took a dip in the water.

low range, being a diesel you use relatively low revs (under 2 grand). i did end up having to run though

a lot of guys here run a bike shifter on the sierra's shifter. They use it as a thumb throttle. The cable hooks to the upper part of the pedal, after the pivot, where pulling on it will rev the engine.

Some guys use the type you can screw down and hold in place, others use the type that "click" and release. Other guys use the kind that automatically return to idle, but I do not have enough coordination to use one that doesn't hold the position I put it in.

They are really great for taking off on a hill so you don't have to use the brake, clutch and gas all at the same time. if you do a lot of starting and stopping o hills, they are a great asset.

I think they would be worth doing if a guy wheeled much at all, but I have so much stuff yet to do finish on my rig, it is low down the list 8)

Here's a couple good threads

This thread has made me laugh! I'm getting great mental pictures in my mind.

When I get bogged I just put a brick on the throttle Get out and pull the car forward by the bullbar. Then when it gets traction I just jump on the bullbar, climb on the roof and spiderman my self back in the car. By this time Ive found I'm halfway home. Works a treat.

I understant what your saying SSSIERA but fark that's some dodgy shit right there.

A mate of mine has a SWB landy with a hand throttle. It's bloody brilliant, the hand throttle that is, not the car.

The get out and push with the hand throttle set sounds stupid but it's saved our arses a few times. In low first with the hand throttle set just enough to stop it from stalling (it's got a 202 so that's not much) it's never going to run away from you.

I'm going to fit a hand throttle to th LJ, I was thinking of useing a nice old lawnmower throttle I have (how appropriate! ). never thought of using a choke set up. I might do that.

its funny to think you guys are soo worried about starting your car in low range while your outside...
yes its not ideal but no means bad or dangerous...
maybe is for the cars not setup that have 31s and STD gearing that will do 120 km/h in low range but for most with gearing its not a problem...
first gear, 6.5 transfer, and 2000rpm, how fast is the car going, what 5km/h... hardly something to get all grimbo about to sssiera..

just farken relax hey

I also have the 6.5's and while I haven't done any ghost driving yet, I wouldn't hesitate if I had to push the thing myself.

Meanwhile, how many revs are we needing here? If I decide I want more revs at idle for a while I just turn the lights or fan on!

Works a treat, I may have my idle up set a touch higher though.
