Hey guys just wondering whether the 2.0l in the jlx is OBD1 or 2

Pretty sure it can be read with OBDII spy via usb dongle interface.....
youll have to get hold of SCAN TOOL as well though and some how find a way to unlock the Suzuki license without buying it from the original software manafacture... Each licence is rather costly.
(Its easy to unlock if you have the knowledge)

Tell me more - to the best of my knowledge there is no commercially available software that can talk to a nonOBDII Suzuki ECU using the proprietary SDL protocols.

You mention OBDII Spy with a USB dongle - OBDII interfaces do not work on the nonOBDII Suzukis because the SDL protocol uses a different pin in the 16 pin connector, and different voltage levels - a custom interface is required along with custom software.

The only thing I have seen that works is Rhinoview which is still under development.

@deonc - it's probably Suzuki OBD1 or to be more precise SDL - Suzuki Data Link - protocol.

OBD2 is by definition a US only standard, and was required on all US vehicles as of 1996, EOBD came next in 2001 for European vehicles, and although backward compatible with OB2, it is a different standard.

Very few vehicles built for use outside of the US before 2000 will have any level of compatibility with OBD2, and I doubt that your 97 Vitara is - but there is really only one way to find out - hook up a reader and try it.

You could also just stick your head under the dash, find the 16 pin connector - if there is one, and check to see which cavities are populated - I'm going to guess 4, 5, 9 & 16 - because that's what my J20 engined 98 GV has.

I have a USB interface and using the Rhinoview software I can communicate with my ECU and extract some pretty neat stuff, but, as I mentioned, it's still under development.

might get me one of those leads if somebody can figure out if the ecu can actually be reprogrammed with it and not just read
