Post subject:  jimny spring retainers
Hi guys can you buy or make spring retainers for the rear of a jimny.
On full articulation my springs are loose, i plan to fit the relocation brackets to get more down travel but then the spring really will fall out. I still have enough up travel left int he shock and bump stop when the other rear wheel is at full drop.

Set up is Pro Comp ES100 shocks and tought dog 60mm springs, i have all the other stuff, bushes, adjustable panhards and extended lines.

Just make something, steel plate.. 70mm x 50mm bolted to the coil seat on the diff with one end overlapping one coil ring. Have done this on all four corners, have been airborne many times for quite a while in some cases and the coils haven't even moved!

ive seen some 1 try to weld the coil to the coil tower, as we know its a mission to weld spring steel

Loose springs at full droop means very little down pressure on the wheel/tyre.
Imho that is not useful travel, as tyre can flop about.
So loss of control/traction is more an issue.
At full droop, springs should still be a bit compressed.
So spring spacers could be wise?

I'm not an engineer, thats just my understanding.

Wheeled mine for a couple of years like this, worked fine and while I agree that at extension some remaining spring tension is preferred, it's not all bad to have a loose spring. Spring spacers will fix the problem in most cases but will also raise the height and restrict compression by that amount, assuming your bump stops don't make contact first.

Just ensure it's held in place guys.

If it is already loose, when shock relocation brackets are added, will be a bit too much looseness.
I agree spacers cause a loss up travel,
but if you relocate bottom of shock to gain 40mm (arbitrary guess),
then adding 40mm spacers keeps travel all nice.
But yes you gain height as well.
Everything is a balance and/or compromise.

Just my opinion, if already have loose spring at droop,
adding more droop could be detrimental

Have had a rethink and you're right, just put some limiting straps on. When I had mine dangling it was because there weren't any mod parts available for Jimnys so it was a compromise through necessity in a hunt for a bit more articulation.

The coils I'm running at the moment are long, and soft at each end which is great for retaining some spring compression while not raising the Jim as much as that long a spring normally would. Unfortunately soft springs wallow during cornering.

My Vit wallows a bit, but I am used to it.
Have no desire to go fast these days anyway.
Until I went from 25mm to 50mm spacers,
my springs unseated at droop,
but the bumpstop extension stopped them falling out.
Drove it like that for a while.

Bumpstop spacers could be wise,
saves coil wear and shocks to chassis,
which could be a bad thing over time?

I couldn't give a f*&^ if my coil were stuffed by tomorrow then i would have a reason to go with custom coils :cool:

Also the jimny stock front springs are suppose to lift the rear 3"s which i will try soon, nice soft factory coil rate :cool:
