Is a Jimny better than a Coily? I'm looking for leafy's but just wondering which would be better for off roading and quite a bit of road driving also. Dave |

He's too far away to hit Lots of things fit coily's. Just not the same things that fit leafys. If you are prepared to think outside the box, a coily is as good of a proposition as a leafy. And this is just my opinion, despite my fondness for all things suzuki; but I am not a huge fan of the jimny. As the suposed continuance of the sierra, the jimny is too soft. More panels, more electrics, more complicated, and worst of all........its STILL under powered. This is ofcoarse my opinion only. I am however commited to making the jimny a vehicle worth owning, hence my interest in making certain parts to bring them up to speed with the likes of the sierra, vitara, GV, CRV, rav4, and lada niva in terms of offroad prowess.

I'm sick of hearing this shit your not the only one. they are both fairly simmilar. it all depends on what u want to do. its much easyer to gear, rear lock,31 a coiler. how ever jims have efi, and you can get a front locker. you can also get bigger lift kits. but i would also like a jim on 30's or so for a daily! and will when i find a cheep one! |

Coilys are for people that cannot afford a new Jimny. At the end of the day a Jimny is still one of the last true 4x4s designed to actually head off the bitumen and that makes them OK with me. Of course as soon as my wife graduates from Uni (again) I'll be selling it for a bigger rig coz I love getting out and seeing Australia and a Jimny doesn't have the range as something bigger. 79 series GXL LC Wagon FTW |

Everything you wrote is rubbish. Except for this. I have my eye on a GXL TD ute. |

I do like the utes, but would prefer a wagon. Either way a TD V8 sounds very nice compared to a 4cyl petrol. This will be my last petrol 4x4. |

GXL ute (NO TRAY!) $60K GXL wagon with 4.5TTD motor $90K++++++
Just imagine the supercharged diesel monster truck SAS's GV you could have for $90K!!!! |

personally i'd take a jimny over a coily... you can get a 10 years newer jimny for near the same money as a sierra and have less things to fix on it... they go very well with 215/75r15 tyres and no lift, and the options are there to modify them now more than ever. sure, theyre not as good looking as a sierra, but they still have the same amount of character on and off the road. what vermin has done to his is a great point for a jimny to be at i reckon. |

Yeah not cheap I know, bit I have 6 years before the wife graduates so I have plenty of time to change my mind. Maybe monster trucks will be more capable on the bitumen by then. |

I think the only negative with a Jimny is the vulnerability of its body panels and as I found out rear side windows. Buy the Jimny if; If you're not planning on spending every free moment chasing down wicked climbs and huge washouts, If you want your girlfriend to love you more, give her a Vanity mirror and A/C (Pete, not everyone has a couple of AC relics from the 80s in their parts pile =) ), If you want a modern version of a tough classic that will keep up with the original, If you want a modern, efficient engine, If you like to be cosy on cold, wet days. Buy a coily; If you like the stripped to basics utilitarian jeep look (I do but prefer comfort now), If you want coil comfort, If you think that Leafies are just getting too old (not everybody wants to or understands vehicle mechanics), Buy a leafy; If your keen to get under it a lot, If you prefer fixing as opposed to mod'ing (because it's old), If your spine is too straight and you'd like to be a bit shorter... from spinal compression, If you like the idea of driving with the windscreen folded down (I did) If you want a 4WD that will go just about anywhere and you won't be worried when you scratch/dent/bash it to within an inch of its' life. [hr] All 3 are great choices for off road activities and the decision should be governed by your planned uses, budget and your own personal preference. I've owned only five Suzukis over 23 years, two of which I only had for a year or less, the others have been long term drives - 8 years in my '89 Sierra 180,000 kms (loved it, rust killed it), 10 years in my Mark II Jimny 149,000 kms (which was very reliable and comfy), My current 2006 Mark III Jimny (bought new and driven by my wife as a stocker until last year). Whatever you decide if you treat it well it will 'Love you long time'. Good luck with your final decision. Paul |

There's some other advantages of the Jimny that haven't been mentioned as far as I saw in the this thread. A) Jimny's are available with an automatic - an advantage both in city driving and off road B)Jimny's have power steering C)Jimnies have a much longer wheelbase than a coiler (8" or so, I think) so they not only ride betterm they climb better too. Coil sierras are a dead end. Yes, they can be made to work, yes, they are similar to a jimny in some ways, but they are more work than a leafy or a jimny to modify and strengthen, and that outweighs the advantage of the nice dash and front clip. If you are happy with a 30" tyre, you won't regret buying a jimny. If you intend exceeding 30", I'd move to a leaf sierra. It's not cost effective to mod a jimny beyond a 30 in my opinion - too much lift/cutting is required, HD cv's are required which means $$$ one way or another - it all adds up. Steve. |

The wheelbase is a really good point Steve. RUF meh, I've already got a longer wheelbase =) |

True, but if you want to avoid firewall work (which is much harder with a Jimny than a sierra) you still need to pull the axle forward a bit if you want to avoid excessive lift to run a large tyre. Also, let's not compare front articulation wheel travel between a properly built RUF sierra and a Jimny. I know it's possible to link/coilover a jimny and make it work, but that's a lot more work and $$$ than RUF - but for the OP, that might be totally irrelevant - it comes back to intended use. if the OP valued off road performance highly, they'd be better in a leaf sierra. For the rest of the time, the Jimny is the better car. I'm no huge fan of Jimny's, I just think they are a better solution than a coil sierra. Steve. |

Do jimnys have solid front axels? And how hard is it to fit 31s? |

Cut at least an inch from the plastic wheel arch flare + the metal flare support. If you go for offset rims they'll hit worse. |
